my Mercer needs some repairs done.ran her today (stationary) runs OK clockwise, but refuses to spin anti-clockwise.
It's the first time I've experienced this bother. 
runs in drive Ok backwards.

That's no good mate.
Didn't you have a similar problem, or was it that it wouldn't drive in reverse?
Hopefully there is a simple solution cos it's a good start that it drives in reverse.

could it be a problem with the reversing gear? the semi circular shaped piece thats atached to the slive valve connecting rod?

yeah. seems to be stiff when i try i run her anti c/wise.

I hate stating the obvious especially as I'm sure you will of done this but have you given it a spot of oil? 
Check for any shaft that may of bent or paint that could of lifted up and got in the way.
I'm sure you will get it figured out or if not someone at your steam club will for you.

Check the timing. Try adjusting the eccentrics. When i got mine it cam with a sheet on how to time it. Ill have a look for it
