My Merry Christmas!!
I got this lovely vertical boilered steam engine(wilesco d3) from my wife for christmas while holidaying in rockhampton.. she has named it "kringel".
-Also, im having trouble trying to make it run?... I think it just needs more running in time, has anyone else had this trouble???

this one i won on ebay and it arrived at my dads the same day i got my vertical.... Double treat!!!!
I think this is the first of the bolt together rollers because its engine frame is also bolted on not rivited..
AND it also has a different type of piston rod to what ive seen before!.
And this is my TE1 that i got about 2 months ago as an early christmas present from my father..
this little beauty my wife and i got our daughter for christmas its a occilating steam engine kit from paper and steam...
It is a good little running engine.
We even had it engraved for her...

Nice engines Me.
Lovely to see the engraved kit engine for your daughter too, very nice
Re the running in of an engine, it is quite common for a new engine to need it. Allows everything to bed in, loosen up.

I like the idea of engraving that engine for your daughter.
I should do something like that for my sons but then I would have to admit they were theirs not mine.

Congrats, mate, to your collection! I bet your daughter loves the personalized machine! Great idea, and very touching! What is wrong with the D3? How many tablets Esbit have you used?

Yes. I acquired one a few months back & it did require some tinkering at first. Had to fiddle with trunion screw/spring quite a bit to find best tension, then discovered piston/cylinder actually preferred thinner oil to the usual, thick steam oil & ran much more smoothly. It now runs fine, although think some more running in wouldn't go amiss & since acquiring a small meths burner, it goes like the proverbial clappers but fried the logo

I love the D3, it seems some of us are very luck to have such thoughtful wives, . I think the engraving, on your daughter's engine, is a great idea, she's much more likely to keep it with her when she eventually flies the coop.
Cheers

The engraved piece for your daughter was a stroke of genius.
I may copy the idea one day as it might just get my daughter
to enjoy having a steam engine! Not an easy hurdle as she is
16 years old and steam is not at the top of her list and it may
not even have made the bottom of her list of interests !

I don't envy you having a 16 year old daughter as I think at that age they give you more sleepless nights than when they are newborn.
I'm happy just having two boys watching what some of my colleges are going through with their teenage daughters.
But saying that, if I do ever end up having a daughter I'm sure I will take all that back.

I have run the D3 about 5 times and still can only get it to turn over 1 to 2 times and then it stops

Ah, Roger! Moose! Me! Well balanced non-oscillators all.
Merry Christmas, and to all, a good steam.

... did you use enough Esbit? I think the burner tray holds 2 tablets. Try, if possible, using 3. Also, use pre-heated water. Is the screw/spring holding the osciliating cylinder perhaps too tight? You could try losening a little, Also, oil it there thoroughly, and wipe off excess oil.
Maybe that will help your D3 to get movin'.
