My new engineBought it!! A flatbase se1 with a base mounted chimney. it is missing its burner, (i think) it has a plug in the boiler (though it still works) and may have had a respray. anyway, the damage is done now, i am getting it for christmas so it aint costing me owt. I have bought it off forest classics. i saw it at bedfordshire and loved it. i got it for 65 inc p+p which isnt bad. i am trying to get him to send me a pic of it. it is probably not worth 30 quid but i like it.
Mamodman123
65 quid not too bad really depends on the conditon, has it been repainted?
Get some pics if you can!
James
no!! i bought it for 65 but i said i bet it isnt worth at the most 30!!!!

I changed my post James sorry for the mix up.
Depends on the condition!

tis k
i think it has been resprayed. did they have the decal on the base or firebox?

Base...... has it an exhaust pipe?
James
bollocks!!
it most probably has been resprayed then.
i feel such a chump
so is 65 inc p+p too much for a resprayed chimney on base se1?? it might not have been resparyed, im not sure!

Depends, is it an early one with no exhaust to chimney?
James
yes. it has a pipe going to the chimney. there is another hole at the bottom of the chimney to let the water drain out.
James
any idea of age
Mamodman123
46 model Jimbo, not too bad for 65 although i'd be a little worried about the boiler and if its been resprayed or not....
James
he says he is going to test it. it will work i would think. it is just the looks
i shouldnt have bought it should i??

Well its still a rare engine Jimbo!
I'd have it for 65 I think
James
even if it had had a total respray and a buggered boiler? i think not!!
i dont know anything about the early models
Mamodman123
| James wrote: | even if it had had a total respray and a buggered boiler? i think not!!

Well if its got all the original fittings like chimney, safety valve piston and flywheel etc its still a very rare model!
James
it has original chimney ( i am sure), original saftey valve, original engine frame (in origianl paint), orginal piston/cylinder, original disc crank, boiler strap, firebox and base. it just that the base and firebox might have been resprayed. and the boiler is buggered cosmetically. thats all thats wrong. oh yeah and it needs a burner which is not a big thing is it? how many wicks would the right burner have?

A dark green 2 wick Burner. With these new decals I'm sure you can get one made anyway Jimbo! If you measure up the tubing and order some to size knock the end caps out and the threads you can easily make a boiler. Let me know if you need any help
It sounds like an ok engine!
Hay its a mamod and its a flatbase stop moaning
James
i ight end up sending it to you to do
thats if you didnt mind. and i would pay you of course

If you can get the tubing the right size I could do it for you...I wouldn't charge, maybe some wick in return? . thats if you don't fancy having a crack at it yourself
James
no i dont want to bugger it up mate! yeh you can have all the wick you can use
Mamodman123
| James wrote: | no i dont want to bugger it up mate! yeh you can have all the wick you can use |
You just need to make sure you have the right size tubing it can be thicker but not on the outside if you know what I mean? Knock all the old threads out and put them in the new boiler!
Sounds easy doesn't it
James
yep!
like putting a logo on a forum! it is bloody hard but sounds easy!! where do you get brass tubing that diameter from??
Mamodman123
| James wrote: | yep!

Well you'll have to measure it when it arrives and contact a supplier of brass tubing on the internet unless you know someone and get it cut exactly right
James
would a DIY place have some? it doesnt have to be ower thick does it?
Mamodman123
| James wrote: | | would a DIY place have some? it doesnt have to be ower thick does it? |
It needs to be the right diameter and length, if a DIY place can cut it to size then i don't see why not
James
right-o i will go and check it out when i get it then.
cheers for all of your help mm

The most important thing is the end caps can be reused on the new boiler
No problem with the help James, that's what we're all here for
James
aye!!
anyhow, does it have to fit tight to the inside of the end cap? i tell you what, i might knock one end off, then take it around with me to find some that is ok, then i can put the 2 bits end to end to compare

Yep that would be ok!
the caps are fairly tight yes! But you can knock them on with your hand so not too tight!
James
so i dont need to heat it up first? i thought they was soldered on not pressed on
Mamodman123

| James wrote: | so i dont need to heat it up first? i thought they was soldered on not pressed on |
Yeah you'll need to heat it up, they are soldered but they aren't a super tight fit

right ho mate. i will be sending it to you after crimbo, cos thats when i get it

It's quite simple

suppose. i dont want to drill it and put the threads in though.

100%
Just need de-soldering, cleaning up, and re-soldering into the new boiler
James
how many threads is there? just the valve?
Mamodman123

The safety valve and the union nut will need soldering in

It's not that hard James, believe me!
It sounds daunting, but a few people have done it, and said it's not the hardest job in the world

if you can pull it off you will be mamodman the boiler maker

I'm not quite sure if I like the sound of that one
It won't be that hard. the majority of the parts are already there, just some small drilling, and a bit of the usual soldering and it will be done!
James
its the usual to you, not to me, i hardly ever solder

I'm a bit late on this topic, but if it's like mine James it should have Mamod stamped into the base and not a decal.
I think I remember seeing it at Dorset actually and it is a very nice engine indeed.

I have seen one with a decal on the base! I think Darren has one with one on. I think the later 46 model could have had the stamped base just after they changed to boiler chimney and used the last of the base chimneys up?

here is some pics forest classics sent me of the engine. tell me what you think about it

Looks nice...apart from that plug sticking out of it, why would someone do that to a perfectly fine engine?
James
does it look original paint??
btw i am going to leave the plug, it gives it character
Steely
It looks to be original paint, the green definately is because it looks like mine, but red and black seems a bit suspect, but I could be wrong.
Sandman

Is that plug screwed into a thread or just soldered in James?
Maybe someone wanted to take another steam take off from the boiler.
Can't think of any other reason.

Hard to tell if it's original paint by the pics.
Does look it, but then I painted my SE2 base a few days ago (pics later), and apart from paint smell, and lack of wear, it looks original.
If i fired it weekly over next 6 months, you probably couldn't tell.
Oh, and if i painted firebox and engine fram to match
Looks ok though, not sure about the plug

No, one of the rarest forms of a post war SE1 - base mounted chimney. Its complete, though the paint is very worn - its a case of to restore or not to restore. Mechanically is it all there?, looks to be.
Wallace

Paint worn??
Those 2 little pics you gotta click on are Steely's engine I think?
That has worn paint.
