My new Mamod Loco running like a champ!

Success
rangerssteamtoys

I read how you fixed it in the other topic. Glad it runs like its supposed to.

Where does the exhaust steam go? I saw alot of blue flames licking the boiler
MooseMan

Wow - that runs like a good 'un! Get it on the tracks mate!
johnreid

The exhaust is right out the bottom and I believe gives the flame a bit of extra kick, I bet that once it os moving on track that the mist will be behind the loco instead of affecting the flame. I am using a high grade Butane and the Gas regulator is only about an eighth of an turn open, any less and the gas shuts off. I believe that the exhaust no only looks better going through the stack, but needs to be routed somewhere other than just below the burner, steam rises and I guess the mist affects the flame.

IF not raining tomorrow morning, I will try iy on track.

Looks like it's making plenty of steam, can you regulate the loco to run slowly or is it still fairly tight and only runs with the regulator fairly wide open?

Most gas regulators have very minimal control and will be turned down almost as far as they go.

I believe that it is still a bit stiff but I do notice speed control woith the Steam Regulator, I bet it improves with use.
The only reason I even mentioned the eighth of a turn open is that the instructions recommend that you open till you hear a slight hiss, then light, and then after burning 30 seconds or so open the gas valve a quarter turn more. I open it more than just the hiss and flames go over the boiler, and once steam is mixed with the flame the flames go even higher, I know that it will take getting used to before I get it perfect. I guess a blind man shouldnt be playing with fire I see, but not that well at the moment. After the third of July I plan on buying some butene/propane mix which might behave better too.

I have every bit of confidence that this one is going to be a favorite, the gas keeps it in steam better than Meths and it runs great. It is my first gas fired engine and I can see that it takes experience. I constantly fear that I will be giving it too much gas, but can see that not enough will not let the steam keep up with the engine.

By the way, I do appreciate all of the advice that I ahve been given..

I'm a fairly regular contributor on the 16mm Association website, there seems to be a mixed response regarding anything Mamod. They are clearly not in the same league as a £1000 Roundhouse or an Accucraft, but they can be a huge amount of fun.

I had low expectations of the new mamod loco, for the price it couldn't be up to much, but after seeing the videos of them running there seem to promise a lot! I'm not sure how they are constructed, regarding modifications but it would be fun to pull one apart and take a closer look. If they can be modified and tinkered with as much ease as the original loco then they will be a real asset to the world of garden railways!

I do think it's shouting out for that chimney to be lopped off and a tube soldered into the boiler so the steam comes out the right place!

I still wonder if a pipe could nit be routed around or in front of the boiler and a fake front be added to hide the pipe. For now I am not going to mess with it, but in the future, who knows?

I do believe that this one is performing better than I expected out of the box, I am thinking that in short time it will perform like most would want one to.

The two major faults that I can see so far are, the need for a lubricator, and the wish for the exhaust to go through the chimney.
alan2525

That's the great thing about mamods, you can do as little or as much work to them as you want. And for a few quid under £170.00 thats a brilliant price.

That runs really well John, I am glad you sorted it out.
