My 'new' Renown Vertical

I was hoping to win the Renown Vertical on ebay today but missed it.
But I still wanted to have a 'new' vertical today for my collection so I went out into my workshop......

On my 'Shelf of Future Projects' was this little baby.

As you can see it was short a few parts but a quick dig around in my parts tray found these.

Thats the bonus of making more parts than you need at the time.
The only part I was missing was a new piston which only takes about 20 minutes to make.

First up I needed to solder in the new overflow bush
Now these need to be inserted through the hole from inside the boiler. A great little trick I figured out a while ago makes this dead simple.
You clean and flux everything then stick a bit of fencing wire through the hole in the boiler for overflow plug bush and out through the hole for the whistle bush like this.

Next you drop the bush over the wire.

Then with a little bit of wiggling and with the help of some tweezers you have it in place.

Out comes the blow torch and your done.

The other 2 bushes were then quickly soldered on.

Then it was over to my lathe to make a new piston.
I didn't take any photos of this as I have a number of times before.

Then it was time to fill up the boiler and try it out.

Did it work?

I guess so, video will follow soon.
Not bad for a couple of hours in the workshop and that's another model rescued from my 'Future Project Shelf'
Now all thats left on that shelf is
A Project Loco, a Bing loco,a Weeden Snowflake engine, a large Bing stationary, a Parken, a Scorpion Horizontal, a cast Iron Jensen and a 2 compartment coach to build for my Lady Anne, so not much really.

awesome tony
Les

Very nice, you just need to master whistle making now.
Burnmafingers

Wow, it must be great to be able to have a quick rummage in your shed and place your hands on spares and bits for what I guess is a less than common engine (and a nice one too)

Nice thread to, showing how to do stuff
johnreid

One resurrected from the dead, great job.
Kritika

Wow nice job Tony,
Just as good as that extortionately priced one you missed on Ebay and a fraction of the cost I bet
Sandman

Great piece of work there Tony.

Well done mate.
steamgranny

And what a wonderful consolation prize!!
At least losing got you into the workshop & another fine engine restored!

I like the idea you've had about fitting the overflow bush, very good indeed.

Of course the first one I had to fit the bush to I spent 20 minutes trying to use tweezes to fit it from the inside before I figured out the easy way.

The other part of the trick is you also must remove the whistle bush to have a big enough hole to insert it through.

I wonder if the engine was designed to be put together that way during manufacture? Not having the fixtures in the way might make it a lot easier to put the boiler together.
Wallace

Very nicely done Tony and top tip with the wire trick
