I have a couple of engines with water pumps but have never seen one working.

Fascinating to watch the pump working.
Wouldn't it need more energy to actually pump water into the boiler, against the boiler pressure?
And wouldn't the "New" water reduce the temperature in the boiler, thereby reducing the available energy?
Just wondering out loud, please excuse me...

Right on both counts Phil.
I rarely use the pumps to top up the boiler, but when I do, I usually use very hot water. Pumping cold water into a hot boiler is probably not a very good idea.

Probably why locos have "feedwater heaters".

to be honest it doesn't make much difference to the boiler, it just lowers boiler pressure.
Its actually quite uncommon for locos to have feed water heaters. When it came to run of the mill type locos it was cheaper not to have one and just inject cold water.
