My S.T.I.A. Comedy Bowman M158This little engine gave rise to many comments at the show.
Everyone who picked it up had a good laugh.
About halfway through the day, the dealer came over to me and asked me if I wanted to buy it.
I said, no way and he said look, I know I shouldn't have bought it, so I'll give you it for £20.00. It must be worth more than that for spares.
He was right, so in the end I said yes.
Here it is in all its glory.
Notice the elegant steam dome with it's beautiful brass etchings. (No, you're not seeing things. It's a brass thimble soldered on.)
Also note the extended firebox and chimney.
The gear layout outside the engine stays is also quite unique.
A Bowman like no other.

I would say it was definately a good price, but a thimble?

I bet the person that did that was real proud of his work.
Worth the £20 as you say and with a bit of work could be restored close to original.

I wonder why he made such a big chimney base, why not just make a new chimney instead?

I like it, maybe a few changes are in order, but all in all it looks like a nice engine. I bet the Sandman can make it into a real jewel.

Perhaps the guy liked the look of the older Jensens and applied it to a Bowman !

The base isn't big enough though.

I remember that one now
For 20 quid you can't complain
Will it ever be a proper 158 again?

Les

Does it have the original dome underneath the thimble?

Nick

The thimble looks dented on the back side.

I remember that well, funny as I was wondering how it was getting on yeasterday
Went to admire your collection and all of a sudden thee was another engine there
Cant go wrong for £20.
You sure its not a prototype

Well, that's a bargain! It can easily be returned to 'proper' configuration.

£20??!!
It's still a Bowman & seemingly in good condition apart from the obvious slight discrepancies I would certainly have bought it but that's hardly a valid yardstick

IF Sandy has buyers remorse, I would take it off of his hands with a 5 pound profit

I like and just what it should be, a bit of fun. Steam it, play with it. For £20 you can just enjoy it and not worry.

£20??
Thimble or not, that's the cheapest Bowman yet. A steam dome isn't hard to make mate, you could have that engine back to original in no time....or you could leave it as it is - I kind of like it that way!

The Tiny Temple of Whimsy is inviolate!
Sandy has a moral mandate to respect the spark of its re-creator,
who has surely died since the work was done;
they might've hung him you know.

PS: needs a bronzed pincushion conversion into a meths burner, is all.
