My SE1a restorationI have had this for quite some time now and all I need to do is paint the firebox and it's done.......just need to find glossy heat resistant paint.
Here is the before picture. When I first fired it a spider ran out of the firebox just as his cobwebs were alight.

Looks quite dirty Steely! I look forward to the results! make sure you put all techniques used! and things you used e.g brasso

Well I could tell you now.
The red paint was so bad that it peeled off with the base being completly rust. I sanded the rust off and gave it a coat of filler primer to fill in any holes and then a coat of normal primer and then a coat of holts radiant red spray paint and in this fantastic whether it came up a treat.
The green thing had paint flaking off so I stripped the paint off, gave it a coat of normal primer and then a coat of holts green that matches the colour.(can't remember what the name was).
Gave all the brass parts a good polishing on the electric polisher and the small bits were done by hand with brasso (of course).
Now all that needs doing is the firebox.

Sounds good Steely. I've used the crack flling primer to good effect before! on a rusty SE3 base
You seem to be good at restoring engines Steely, how long have you been doing this sort of thing?

Well we will have to see the end result first. This is my first proper restoration actually.
I have only been into Mamods seriously since the start of this year really.

Well that sounds good Steely! that's a good engine to start the restoration off with considering you've not been collecting too long. You still have some great Mamods
I look forward to the end result

B+Q do a heat resistant enamel which withstands temps of up to 200 deg C, dont know if its avaialble in a spray though!
What about exhaust paint? - I used to use some very hight temp paint on my Suzuki Trail bike years ago!

I'll try B+Q . Another option maybe would be to paint it with satin or matt and then a coat of laquer or something to make it shine? Havn't tried it myself yet so only a suggestion.

Hi Dauntless.
I managed to find gloss black high temp for my MEC1. Has been fine so far. I got it done at a smash repairs.
I have done some other tests, with a "homemade" type firebox for paint testing and I am not sure if they sell it in UK but so far a anti rust paint called Galmet in a aerosol can has withstood a total of 4 test firings so far. Firebox is made of thing sheetmetal, replicating a Mamod one, roughly SE2 size. Even bent a bit of sheetmetal for a replicated boiler bottom to ensure most things are equal to a actual Mamod Firebox.

OK I have finished it now. Before and after pics:
