My Second Scorpion Horizontal

Here is the Scorpion Horizontal that I recently won on ebay.
This is my second one of these models but this is the version with the black firebox. It also has a smooth piston rather than the type with 3 grooves to trap the oil that my other model has.

As you can see its had a hard life and will need a full restoration.
I would doubt that there is enough paint left on the top side of the base to cover a postage stamp so a full strip and respray for the base after treating the rust.
The firebox isn't much better and will require repainting also.
The SV is seized in the boiler and will need some care to remove too.

Judging by the scorching on the underside of the base I would say this model was subjected to some heat.

Got a few other jobs that need to be finished before I start this one so probably won't get to it until mid January.
Its always good to have a spare project.

It looks like a nice engine even in this state. I'm sure it'll come up as well as your other one.

Nice engine! Its had a hard life!

I'm beginning to think that the red paint used on these engines wasn't too good as the two I have and the one Flywheel has all have had to be repainted.

Guess they didn't figure on people still using then some 50 to 60 years after they made them.

It is pretty meaty. Its also the same one used on their vertical engines.
I'll go weigh it later.

Look forward to the results Tony

Just did a comparison to a Mamod Sr1 flywheel as its about the same size.
The mamod one weighs 62 grams whilst the Scorpion one 128 grams so just a bit over twice the weight of Mamod's comparable size flywheel.

Under all that crud it looks pretty good, Tony, an excellent buy.  I think the worst part is wrestling with that stupid nut & bolt bit that holds the boiler to the firebox.  Maybe it will be the first resto in your new shed, a fitting  christening,

Cheers
