My SL2's first runI plan on converting this SL2 to run on 45mm track so I have no 32mm track and I only have a half circle of 45mm track at the moment anyways, so I built a wooden jig to hold the train whilset it was running and it work very well.
I know wood is not the best material to use with a meths fueled train but it was what I had at hand.
I made it a close fit and once water had splashed onto the wood and it swelled a bit there was no way the train was falling out.
The vid show first it just warming up.
Then flat out forward and reverse.
Then the steam plume which I was most impressed with.
Finally it running very slowly just before it runs out of steam.
The controls are very touchy.
A bit of steam was leaking from forward reverse valve so I think when I fit the new pistons I will dismantle it and lap the faces.
Enjoy.

Runs real well. What was the steam plume from?

Where steam plumes come from on most trains.
The Chimney.
Well the hole where the chimney should be anyways.

That's great tmuir. Best steam exhaust on a model i've ever seen
Now here's a question and probably silly, but I have a great lack of steam train knowledge.
On a real loco, is it just smoke, or smoke and steam from chimney?
A great runner tmuir, nice buy

Both,
The steam is vented up the chimney which creates a draft that draws the fire/smoke from the firebox to smokebox and out the chimney.
This is done so the fire heats the boiler effeciently.
On model coal fired trains they usually fit an electric fan on top of chimney to create a draft to draw fire through until boiler raises steam then a small jet of steam is vented up chimney to keep draft going and fan is removed.
Once boiler is at full pressure exhaust from the cylinders keeps draft going and small jet of steam can be turned off.

Internally gas fired boilers do not a fan to raise steam as the fire is already inside the boiler, like my Lady Anne I am building.

Very nice ........
Looks to be a good runner, even before you put your 'Carlos Fandango' pistons on
It's addictive watching these videos, now I'm going to have to dig out my green SL1 & give it a run on blocks, before I let the nipper loose on it .
I spent a bit of time 'lapping' my kit SL pistons & regulator on Sunday. The regulator wasn't too bad but the one piston was a mile out. I used a glass drinks coaster for my flate edge and a mixture of 800 to 1500 wet and dry paper. I also replaced all the O rings (regulator and pistons), so will see about painting it and putting back together very soon. No doubt spured on by your efforts.
Way to go tmuir, let us know how you get on with the steel wheels and uprated pistons.
Darren.

Darren if you are going to run it on blocks just make sure you provide a way of securing it there. I just used wood blocks infront, behind and to the sides of the loco screwed down to main bits of wood and made the loco a snug fit which worked well.
A test run on wood blocks for Mamodman ended in flames when his loco jumped off the wood blocks. It was because of his bad luck that I put all the extra blocks on my jig to stop it from happening to me.

Wise words tmuir, I'll have a visit to the shed tonight when the little one has gone to bed and see what I can come up with, in terms of a Loco test rig
