N&B TE1Hi all
started work on the TE1 my friend gave to me. Should be a easy do up. I have resprayed the smokebox and boiler, just need to swap the pipes over now (they are soldered in the wrong place so the engine only reverses!). The flash highlights the paints inperfections on the boiler. It looks ok in normal light. The biggest job is to patch a rust hole in the firebox. I shall use metal filled epoxy for this.

good look mate just a bit of good old tlc and she will look like new I hope that you will post some pics when done

What paint did you use on the boiler?
Also, how do you solder the pipes into the boiler without burning the paint?

I used Humbrol enamel. Dad painted my TE1A with it when he did her up and we had loads left.
I shall use my soldering iron. My big one

I'm looking forward to finishing this one. Missing the canopy but hey. Do any of you guys know where can I get some Mamod style screws and nuts for the firebox? I want them to look as original as possible.

latest update, the hole in the firebox has been patched. I filled it with a piece of very thin brass at the back making up for the hole and then covered it in metal loaded epoxy. This will make a very strong repair. When its set (I'm going to leave it for a couple of days) I shall spray the patched area with filler primer to just finish it then respray the whole assembly. I'll pop a new hole for the boiler screw through the repair before painting.
I managed to find a correct period safety valve in the bits box.
The front axle has had a new nut and spring fitted and it is now firmly attached to the smoke box.
I also got some nice brass 6BA nuts and bolts that look original.

latest update. boiler is painted, engine frame is painted, firebox is repaired and painted, and best of all I found some nice brass screws to hold it all together with, so it looks authentic
in the second pic you can just see where I filled the rust hole. Its under the left hand screw. The excess epoxy resin was sanded off with an orbital sander and left a good clean surface as well as preparing it for painting. A bit of red primer and then satin black and job was a good'un. The brass plate patch fell off when I drilled the hole for the boiler screw, but the resin remained, so its worked
I also couldn't resist bolting the smokebox on

Thanks guys, I'm just glad it made it to being fixed up. The shade of green is totally wrong but...I like it, its a restoration to make it usable and presentable, so such things aren't a problem.

its a little off, but its not bad.
I tested it today but the cylinder bracket leaks way too much steam between it and the actual cylinder for it to work I'm now at a slight loss as to what to do.

here is a picture showing the newly rearranged pipes. They were the wrong way round before, so the engine would only reverse. No good for an engine that has to run forwards in mobile mode!

tow rope, just a cheap little detail
I can tell you now I've set light to it a few times when she was solid fuel fired!
