NAME PLATESI have a number of metal namplates for my locos and was wondering whats the best way to attach them to live steam locos

Double sided tape. Allows them to be fairly easily removed again if so desired.

no I want something a bit more permanent or I will them lose for sure

super glue works a treat.
I have a np on my boiler- that hasn't fallen off yet been on there for over 6 months.

We have a brand in OZ called 'Super Glue' but I guess any of those instant cyanide based glues would work but I would use the gel kind.
Don't use araldite though as that softens when it gets hot.

That's what Mamod use on the new William, and I know of other loco owners that use this method as well. The tape to use is the kind sold for sticking carpets together, and not the old Blue Peter favourite which is only really for paper & cardboard.
Super Glue can be a bit messy on a previously smooth painted surface, as I've just found whilst glueing lamp irons to one of my locos.

I'd suggest making a template from a piece of plastikard so you can align that with the tank on the loco, or tape it on temporarily, then hold one edge of the nameplate against it and then push it down flat.
One of my pet hates is seeing wonky nameplates and decals etc on models!
