ncseverson's Wilesco D24 "VIDEOS PAGE 3"Well, I bought my first Wilesco, a D24, and I will soon find out if it was a good decision or not. It is missing the smoke stack, burner tray handle, governor & spring/belt, pipe on boiler drain and water tray. I noticed they sell for $700 new, so I figured it shouldn't take much to get it back to good shape. Here it is:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI....amp;item=120224140079#description
I paid $94.07 plus shipping.
I contacted the seller before bidding and got quite a few pics that helped my decision to bid, here are the pics:

Nick, I think that is a brilliant buy (my first thought had a bad word in front of brilliant )
For that price, you can't go wrong.
You mentioned these as a problem
It is missing the smoke stack
Buy a spare, or just make one/adapt one?
Missing burner tray handle
Easily fixed
Missing governor & spring/belt,
They don't do anything anyway do they? Maybe a Jensen one will fit?
Missing pipe on boiler drain and water tray.
Doesn't matter re water tray, and not sure what you mean re the pipe, but if a new one can be adapted, then easily fixed.
If that works with these missing bits, I don't see a problem at all
Well done mate

Nick

I got him to send pics where the governor goes in, take a look guys and tell me if I can put a new one in, if not, I really don't care.
Reid
Of course you can replace the governor, easy as pie.
All those little things are inconsequentially easy to replace.
What a great, great deal you got. It's tucking tanfastic!
(somebody had to tay it)
Nick
Does the gov. just slip into that post?
Reid
yes!
Nick
The seller didn't know about the whistle either, but all of its problems seemed very minor.

I think the governors are $18 from toysteam.. they just sit in the hole .. and spin from the belt ... $94 is a steal... I love that low angle site glass and the oiler and gauge!!! Cool-io!!
So new esbit tray - or convert to meths burner( $1 + stack($20)+ governor($18+ exhaust catch tray ( $7)... + elbow grease.. your home free for $65 bucks -- GREat catch.......
P.S. don't hire the seller for wedding pictures
Nick
The pictures were very poor, but better than the ebay ones. He even unpackaged it this morning to get the pics.
It will be esbit and meths fired, depending on how much esbit I have laying around (it keeps breeding in my closet ).

That's not a bad buy at all, and you can still get all the missing parts.

I voted for 'a good buy'.

I put the poll on this one, to see how they work. When the engine arrives, I'll change the poll, to have you guys help me with some decisions on fixing it.

Does anyone have any tips for this one?
I'll check back in about 4 1/2 hours, it's about 4:00 am and I have to work at 10:00 am, so I'll check back before work.

Buy the parts and put them on.

None so far. I'm looking forward to you getting it though.
I never knew where Wilesco spares could be bought, but since Les put up that link, I'd buy all needed spares (or most) then run it.
Perhaps make a meths burner for it?
Steam it, and enjoy it. If you don't like it, you can sell it on, more than likely at a nice profit

I keep hearing of places that sell Wilesco parts, I would love to find a source in the US for my Smoky. I do believe the governor just drops in place and does nothing but draw down power. Keep us posted as you receive it.

Hi, Nick! I've got a D24el. I can say you made a good deal on it. The D24 is brute power in relatively small dimensions. My tip is: Mount it to a sturdy wooden base. Even though it a heavy bugger, it tends to start wndering off at high rpm's.
Cheers, mate! You're gonna luuuv that D24! Oh, before I forget: Yours has the older grey base plate, which is not only a more pleasing sight (to my mind) than the electric blue ones (like mine), but also makes it more sought-after by collectors.

Thanks guys, has anyone used this site for ordering parts:
http://toysteam.net/
johnreid
That is ministeam, they seem to have a few domain names. From what I can tell they have a limited offering, if the part is listed I bet they have it but if it isnt, well I dont know. I think parts must be a nuisance to some dealers as it is difficult to buy them domestically. I will try to contact them for the parts I need and see what they say. Has to be done on a weekday, if there is someone manning the phone.

Nick...toysteam.net, ministeam.com, Wilesco-company.com and The Great Toy Steam Co. are all the same vendor. Gent named Doug Pusser who operates the business out of his home in Ohio. I have bought several engines and a few parts from him without problems.

I sent Happy Hobby an email last Friday asking about Wilesco parts. I am hoping that March is the month that my Smoky gets running.

Looks in pretty good condition. Hows it look close up?
Still amazed at how cheap it was
Nick
After seeing the size, I am amazed at the price too. I think I put a bid around $130 in on it, but won for about $40 less.
It has very minor problems. The worse condition part is the base. The boiler has a small ding and a little area with a few scratches. I am not sure if the whistle works right.
Another thing I noticed was from looking underneath, I can see a napkin inside the little control box, so the line must have a small leak.

Haven't even looked yet, just decided to fire it up and see what happened. It didn't seem to leak at all.

A few more "steam shots"
2 closeups of it running:

I think he likes it
Nick

It sure likes to eat the esbit! Three tablets to heat the water up. Added two more to start it, and added another three to keep it going. Eight tablets total for about a 15 minute run!
It didn't use hardly any water at all, so I think if I get a meths burner, I will have a very long run time out of it, instead of adding lots of esbit.

... looks and runs great, Nick! Does the pressure gauge work allright?
Nick
I think the pressure guage works, but I guess I didn't really let it build much pressure, just enough to run it.
toxx
... it should show even the slightest pressure gain. Should it be out of function: It can be replaced with a Wilesco spare gauge.
Nick
There's a napkin jammed inside there, so I'll have to take it apart and see why.
johnreid
burn the napkin and save on Esbits
Nick
I took the cover off and the napkin is dry.
That must be a good thing.
johnreid

It doubles as a Napkin holder, you can steam as you eat.
Nick
Cover off to show the napkin:
Pressure gauge works, but should it have this small bit of solder on it?
toxx
... it looks like it's been repaired. But, hell: If it works, it works!
Your whistle need a little lead weight. Can be obtained via German ebay. Wilesco doesn't make them anymore.
Nick
I wonder if the napkin was just in case it leaked. You can't see the solder when it's on the engine, so I am leaving it.
toxx
... Nick, here's the weight that goes for your whistle. Wilesco doesn't make them anymore. Cheap, too:

Click on "Fragen an den Verkäufer". There, you have to choose a topic for your question ("Wählen Sie eine Frage für diesen Artikel aus"). It's a drop-down window. There, click onto "Allgemeine Fragen zu diesem Artikel" (General questions to this item). Enter your question - the rest works like ebay in the US.

... sure you will, Nick. Piece o' cake. I dealt with a chap from Russian ebay once. O boy! But we got it all sorted out.

I did a real simple fix on this one a few minutes ago. It was to "Wilesco-ish" and needed a Jensen part. Who can spot the new (simple) addition to this engine?
Les
You have now got a knob ................................... on the burner, and maybe the napkin was put in there to reduce vibration.
Nice little runner, well done.
Nick
My Jensco burner:
I needed to add it, because when I went to add esbit, I burned my fingers and dropped it on the ground. The esbit crumbled and I had a fire on the floor.
It was a cheap, easy replacement and doesn't look too bad on there.
Les
If you had a fire, you should have put a boiler above it.
And what about the napkin idea?
Nick
It could be.
I took it out, but I can always jam some more in there.
johnreid
I was wondering if it wasnt to reduce vibration. I think you could come up with something that would work better though. It might reduce some noise too.
Les
| johnreid wrote: | | I was wondering if it wasnt to reduce vibration. I think you could come up with something that would work better though. It might reduce some noise too. |
Maybe a piece of foam as in the SP range.
Nick
There shouldn't be much vibration, it's just a steam line and pressure guage.
johnreid
I have found in the past that many gauges are very sensitive to vibration, needles bounce about if there is any bounce involved. I would think that the whole Wilesco probably vibrates doesnt it?
Les
| ncseverson wrote: | There shouldn't be much vibration, it's just a steam line and pressure guage. |
How close are the pipes to the holes, and run it without the tissue to see what it's like.
Nick
I suppose it would affect the needle because it does move easy.

... you're probably right. I'm not gonna open mine to check, but your thoughts about vibrations ring true. Nick, you could replace the napkin with something more effective. Perhaps some kind of industrial foam?

Does anyone have the dimensions of this weight? (length of weight, length of handle, diameter of bottom of weight and top of weight)
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI....sPageName=STRK:MEWA:IT&ih=019
I have decided it would be very easy to make one out of lead, so any dimensions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks for your help!
johnreid

It hangs from the lever on the Whistle, why not measure the handle and from there the exact shape would make no real difference.
