Never Try & Con a Woman - an Early Birthday PresentWell, I guess I spoiled my birthday present, The other week I went to bid on the last of the Weldon engines and was told, in not uncertain circumstances not to!
Here's the reason why, the first of the Weldon OZ engines to go on ebay. I won't go into all the whys & wherefores but my darling wife got my daughter-in-law to bid on it (so I wouldn't know) and the reason my daughter-in-law bid on the second one was, my son fell in love with it and wanted one for himself, which he didn't get - badger won it.
Aren't women absolutely wonderful.
This is quite a large engine and, is much larger than the Renown which is shown with it as a comparison.
All three Weldons offered recently were with out burner, it will be interesting to see when/if one comes up on ebay whether the burner is a discrete one like the Renown one or a make do like the Parken & Scorpion.
Oh, and the reason the renown is still on restored is that I'm not doing anything to it until the decal maker is finished making the decals for it. I'm simply not going to risk ruining probably the most complete Renown decal seen thus far.
Cheers
Chris

Gee I didn't realise the weldon engine was that big, came up a treat, so 2 out of 3 came to the forum, but none to me.
I'll just have to keep my eye out for another one.
I wonder if the Weldon ever had a decal, I guess only time will tell.
My wife has given up trying to surprise me and now just asks me what I want.
Is the base cast iron or some other material?

Sad you missed out Tony, may be the next one will have the burner so we can all find out what it looks like.
The base is cast iron and it's quite heavy, it needs to be because of the size of the engine. It has quite a big cylinder and piston, the cylinder is quite thin for it's size, 5/8" bore, about 1/2 the thickness of the Mamod one and the piston has a groove cut around it about 1/3 back from the top end.

I thought you were going to say that you got in to a bidding war with your daughter in law. That would have been quite funny.

I really like that Chris, it's a monster of an engine.

I thought it was new until I read more of the thread!

You've done a lovely job with that engine mate - now I know what mine should look like (is going to look like I should say!). Its exactly the same model as mine - what did you use for the S/V washer and O ring?

I used a Mamod SV 'o' ring for the top 'o' ring and I got another 'o' ring from Repco to fit the bottom of the SV instead of a washer. The reason I used an 'o' ring rather than a washer is that I've found that most verticals have slightly curved tops even if the look flat and the ordinary flat fibre washers won't seal properly.
