New 1967 TE1a Arrived

Hi guys!

Got the TE1a today, the one I bought for 25 quid . Arrived well packed. Everything on the boiler unscrewed very easily, thankfully

At a first glace it looks pretty good. It is the 1967 version which me and Griffin thought it would be . It pretty much seized up at the moment, but with a bit of oil i'll get her moving. A lot of dust, so it's not seen light of day for a good while

Paintwork all looks pretty good. It's not 100% total mint but it's pretty damn good. No ,major paintloss around/under the boiler. No faded wheels all looks pretty good and all original. Canopy writing is almost all gone on one side but doesn't bother me too much.

You can see the straight lever too! which is what I was hoping to get for another variation for the collection.

Some fool has drilled the scuttle so I may look for a replacement at some point. Still does it's job but with four extra holes

Should clean up easily enough, if anyone has a brass whistle handle they would sell to me? i'll gladly take off your hands. You can see the one in the whistle isn't right

I'll keep you all up to date with the clean-up job. Will probably wait until I get back off holiday though
Griffin

Nice one MM, all is well with the straight lever

Pity about the scuttle , other than that a good engine that will clean up a treat.

Oh and £25, jammy begger. MM, it is a good job you are not getting sniped on BIN's

Well done

Cheers Griff! yup the straight arm TE1a I wanted . I think Steely and Dauntless have one

£25 was a steal! If I could have got sniped I probably would have . Will clean up well.

Not sure why some idiot drilled the scuttle, but I aint gonna complain for the price

MM, you might want to re-word the phrase 'I'll gladly take off your hands' Nice buy, at least you have finally had some luck in buying an engine!

Hey MM, bargain of the day!!!

You could easily fix the 4 extra holes in the scuttle using a bit of cello tape on the inside, flow epoxy into them from the outside...if done carefully you could just fill the holes themselves and put a dab of paint on both sides and be done...or sand them smooth and repaint the scuttle completely. Either way, you can make them disappear with epoxy...works a treat.

Cheers Tinkttt! hopefully you can buy the one off your friend. These ones don't turn up too often on ebay and when they do, they do quite well.

Hopefully you can get it

Yup! I like a Mamod or two in my collection
old_timer

A nice buy MM123. That was the BIN one wasn't it?

If you decide on a new scuttle, you know which type to get now - definitely the full height version and it should still have the hole for the rivet used on the original SR1 scuttle/burner assemblies if I'm not mistaken (OMG, I've turned into a scuttle anorak now! )

Also pity about the broken whistle, we've all got one like that. We need someone who can make up new lever arms!

Still a cracking bargain at the price you paid.

Yep that was the BIN one that someone put up on here!

Scuttle anorak

The handles don't look too hard to make (famous last words)

MM, Just noticed this one is a little intriguing, as it has copper boiler rivets, but still has the grub screw holding the flywheel in place. I think it's a good example of the transition to the 1a.

Yes I noticed that too, but didn't think too much of it

Definatly shows how it evolved . Maybe I could get a TE family shot, first to TE1 riveted then the TE1a

Would be good for comparison

Good idea, once you have it all cleaned up, line them all up for a family portrait

Wallace

Nice one MM

That was an absolute bargain, and to me those small probs mean nothing. Not at that price.

Well done on a great buy
Stitch

The same as Wallace, MM. A great buy and I am green with envy
Graham-Jilly

Great TE at a great price well done MM
steamyman

nice Machine, MM123.
Manxman

Another great addition MM. However, I am now getting concerned that you may have to many Mamod Traction Engines and your collection is becoming unbalanced. Clearly the answer is to sell me your early TE1.

I'm looking forward to the family pic.

Mamodman123

Hi guys!

I finally managed to get the TE1a cleaned up and finished today just after getting back from holiday, I was quickly back into the swing of things

Before:

After:

I managed to replace the broken whistle handle with an SE2 regulator, not exactly correct but it would do the job well enough

Another interesting variation to the collection, I would have liked to have kept one of the 1972-76 TE1a's to go along with this one as a proper comparison. I shall grab a family snap of TE's at some point. When the weather is nicer and the sun is out. (approx date 2012 at this rate).
Sandman

Excellent Job MM.

Nothing like a bit of polishing to get you back into the swing of things.

Griffin

Very nice MM, that one has scrubbed up well.

You can still see a lot of the TE1 features in that one.

Did you use car polish on the boiler? It really has a shine to it
SillyBilly

Aaaaaaaaaah, that's nice! How do you get the chrome and the wheels to come up like that?????????
Mamodman123

SillyBilly wrote:

Griff: Yep I used car polish, not rubbing too hard as the paint is very thin but enough to remove the dirt and grime

SB: I just removed the wheels and polished them with brasso and a cloth! The chrome was in god condition its just a case of removing the crap and polishing up gently
SillyBilly

Can you take the hub caps off and re-fit them, or do you need spare hubcaps?
Mamodman123

SillyBilly wrote:

Yes you can re-use them! Pop them off with a pair of pliers
SillyBilly

Aaaaaah! Great, Ta!
Graham-Jilly

they come off but are dificult
Wallace

Great work MM.

Excellent cleanup, as usual.

I spent 5mins on one TE1 wheels and when I didn't start seeing shiny silver colour, I gave up

sounds like you Wallace

You can use wet and dry on them first speeds the process up by about 80%
Wallace

Cheers mate. I must try that.

The mazak was the only parts that the miracle wadding didn't work on.

Yeah, my patience was wearing a little thin by the time I had polished all the other engines

So I also discovered today, I got right tee'd off after about 20 minutes of tryting to polish the wheel on my early raised base SE2 . Thanks for the tip MM, 1,000 grit W & D OK?

BTW, a great job on the TE1.

Cheers

If you feel the paper may be too harsh then rub it on an old tin and wear it away a bit then proceed, you don't want anything too harsh, just enough to remove the laquer and any scratches etc.

Feel free to use a dremel or a polishing wheel! I promise that Mazak can and is shiney
