New laptop! (sort of)I got a free laptop today from my sister's boyfriend who gives me just about anything.
For the record, this is my 2nd laptop. But, both my laptops aren't the best, my old one, a dell inspiron 3500 with a 333 mhz pentium 2 and a 4 gig hard drive and windows XP.
The other my sister's boyfriend gave me is a 1995 compaq presario 1075, with a pentium 1 150 mhz processor and a 1.5 gig hard drive and windows 95
For the other record, i have now 17 computers, all functioning (some not properly)
The oldest is a 1981 IBM PCjr, with 8 mhz processor and no hard drive, has the original monitor and keyboard, even has a modem (3000 bps) to get online with it, but all the internet back then was text documents. Not capable of getting online now.
I don't know about you, but i think i like computers almost as much as steam engines.

The thing about it
Mom: "I don't get why you like smelly steam engine"
Dad: "I don't get why you like complicated computers"

Crikey, that takes me back!
I started out on a ZX81, before I switched to the venerable TRS-80, which was this fantastic looking all-in-one silver thing.
My ZX is now sitting on my mac, which has 1500,000 times as much memory

Jeez. Just shows how far we've come in a relatively short time.

My old graphics card that I replaced about 6 months ago has the same computing power as earth had back in 1980!
Now doesn't that put it all into perspective how much computers have evolved over the last 27 years!

Wow - nice stat!
What gets me (I'm a professional sound engineer) is that I can now do on an off-the-shelf PC and approximately 500 quid of software and hardware what ten years ago would have taken about 8000 quid of dedicated hardware.

Doesn't it just
On July 21st 1969 Niel Armstrong set foot on the moon and uttered his famous one liner "That's one small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind" If you had walked up to him and shown him a digital watch he would have had no idea what it was and no idea of the technology that made it work!

His first thought would probably be "how the heck did that guy get on the moon before me".

Sorry, I am going off topic, but hey, this is the off topic board.
What I find really surprising is this. I am 32, and no one has landed on the moon in my lifetime.
It is a bit like when concorde was taken out of service. It is an old aircraft yet no one had built a quicker or more economical one in all the years since it had been designed. I wasn't surprised it went out of service, I was more surprised that nothing had stepped up years ago to take its place.

Yes, we have come a long way since the first computers. The very first computer was about 1/2 a mhz, and took up about 3 10 foot by 10 foot rooms.
1/2 mhz is about half as fast as a palm sized calculator today.
Anyone have one of those TI-83 calculators? Those have 55 mhz processors.
My PDA has a 400 mhz processor!
Ipod videos have 55 mhz (same processor as the TI-83's) and now up to 40 gigs and higher, and all in your hand!
The graphics card in my vectra has a 1 ghz processor on it (that is actually faster than the processor on m vectra itself!)

I totally agree mate.
I'm 31, so in the same situation. They landed on the moon so long ago, and can't do it again
