New M135 and SP5See below my "new" M135 which is in good condition but requires a bit of minor work. Also my new Mamod SP5 which is simply fantastic.
Bowman m135
Mamod SP5
The SP5 is a real jewel its just such a high quality of construction.

Oh and the M135 has a safety valve but it isn't pictured and requires a new spring and washer

Very nice pair of engines there. The SP5 is like new , I now understand why you just had to have it.
The M135 is very nice too, virtually complete. Just noticed it does not have a whistle, did some of the 135's come with no whistle?

No whistle on the 135 - only on the 122 and 101.
Very nice 135 it is as well - as good as any I've seen. Chris Ford is a good source for spares, and I believe our own MamodFan does very reasonably priced oiler caps:

Very nice pair, there.
When did they delete the reverse on the SP5? Does this coincide with the drop in quality that I've heard so many mention?

Sometime in the early 80's. The reversing type was designed whilst Malins still had control of the company, but in 1980 the receivers were called in, as a result, Mamod was then bought out by a succession of new owners and a few changes were made.

love the SP5, never seen the junction between all the pipes before. Bet that took ages to solder in the factory!

The SP5 is a great engine! The quality is just as good as an SE3 just about.
Careful with the M135 mine exploded at Stia with a new spring on the S/V

Thanks all for your comments. I'll probably treat the M135 with kit gloves but still fire it thats really why I bourght the SP5 to use it.
Mooseman: I am getting a overflow plug and springs for the safety valve from Chris, the oiler top hopefully from Mamodfan and the oiler tap I'll make sometime soon. Are the boiler on the 135 and Sp5 Lacqued or not? When I get a spring frm Chris ford I'll fire it. Do you know how to get oil on the port face of the cylinder without taking the cover off. Also do I have to take the whole thing apart...carefully to get at the cylinder.
MM: What the hell happen to make yours "explode" it can't have been a soldered joint. Still all adds to the fun along as you don't kill yourself

Laquer looks in good nick on the 135, i wouldn't polish it off just to make it shiny (nice original patina). If you don't have a fine nosed oil can or syringe, a drop of oil on the end of a cocktail/match stick through the hole in the cover should get it in the right place. Most important of all give the 135 a good steaming they're fantstic runners.

Ummm well it wasn't the Bowmans fault really. I took the safety valve out when there was pressure in the boiler so we all got a shower
Oh and mine randomly used to go BANG and spray water everywhere

I remember when I first got my wilesco old smokey I thourght you were suppose to oil it via the lubricator whilst steaming so I took it off and was suprised that steam shot out of the oiler. Oh well

I forgot to replace the cap whilst steaming up so I got an oil shower

I didn't plan on polishing it as I feel it would loose its character thanks for the tip about getting the oil in mj. I reckon it should steam well as everything turns over very freely
