Hi to everyone.

I've been lurking here for a while but I decided to join in.

I am a retired UN official here in Geneva and have always had a soft spot for steam.

I also have a small collection of old pressure lamps. My wife thinks I'm a little mad. Probably right.

I currently have just two stationery engines (a small early Mamod and a Wilesco D12), but with more time on my hands now, I feel the urge to get back to this fascinating hobby.

Anyway, from what I've seen, there's a nice friendly bunch posting here and I look forward to learning a lot more and possibly expanding my collection.

Welcome to the forum John! I think we're all slightly steam mad here, in the nicest possible way.  There's no known cure, and with time on your hands and a hankering for steam... well, I hope you have plenty of shelves!
Sandman

A big Scottish   John.

You're in the right place.

Here you'll find an international bunch of toy steam enthusiasts who will help in any way we can.

You've also joined at a very exciting time for the forum as we have our very first Steam Toys World Wide Weekend, just coming up.

Hope to talk steam with you soon.
Les

Welcome to the forum .
And now you are here you will soon experience the 'forum effect', an ever expanding collection with no known cure.

We would love to pictures of your engines and your pressure lamps as well.

Welcome aboard John, from another steamer in Indiana, USA.  We are all a bit steam mad, but from my perspective that's not such a bad thing!!!
calypso

Thank you all for the very warm welcome.

I became interested in watches some time back and I now have a substantial collection.

Maybe I should get out while the going's good!

... ein herzliches Grüß Gott aus Wien, John! Soft spot for steam, eh? Slightly mad, eh?  Well, that sums up our little lot here on the forum! You're at the right place!
Looking forward to some pix of your engines - and those watches. I've a nice silver IWC pocket watch I call my own. And on my wrist? A Tissot Automatic PR100 - of course.

... wow, John!   Those watches ... do I spot an Omega Seamaster, and perhaps a Rolex Air King?
calypso

Hi Tom.

Top row (first photo) are a Rolex Datejust (1982), an Omega Speedmaster Pro (1969, Moon Watch), an Omega Seamaster Pro (2008) and a Poljot Kirova aviator (2008 re-issue).

But where's the LED casio and a swatch flick flack? Both true classics!
calypso

I agree Alan. Don't have those I'm afraid.

Hi John,

A very warm welcome from Richard and my son Andrew in the U.S Virgin Islands.

As residents of the West Indies, home of Calypso, I was wondering how you chose that username?

Looking at your watch collection, unless you decide to collect mint condition antique Nuremburgs, no way are you going to spend that kind of money on steam.

Although the picture quality isn't great, I'm assuming the first four across are Rolex. As I build jewelry stores for a living I get duty free, wholesale pricing on most of these items.

Accordingly I have amassed a small collection of my own.  Top left, the DateJust with the steel and gold jubilee band.  I have this with the black face.  My wife has the ladies version with the Mother of Pearl face.  I bought the stainless steel Submariner for my son on his 21st birthday.

But where is the holy grail of Rolex, the stainless steel Daytona.  I can get it, so rare and collectible in it's own right, but with no price break.

The others don't show enough detail for me to identify with certainty.

I have also acquired, at cost, the Jaeger le Coultre Master Control, the Breitling 'Blue Angels' limited edition Chronograph and a Patek Philippe.

Look forward to seeing you on the forum.  PM me for duty free wholesale watch prices. I can also get employee discounts, but these are limited and cannot be guaranteed.

Welcome from Oregon!! I like the sheer variety of times that the watches all show!.... stainless steel for me too.... good taste there Richard
calypso

Thank you Richard and Mo.

Richard, top row (first photo) are a Rolex Datejust (1982), an Omega Speedmaster Pro (1969, Moon Watch), an Omega Seamaster Pro (2008) and a Poljot Kirova aviator (2008 re-issue).

This is where I "mess about".

By the way, I also have this US-made stirling engine which I bought a few years ago, which looks remarkably like the Davies Charlton engine http://www.stirlingengines.org.uk/manufact/manf/gb/cart.html

Les

That looks very similar to the Manx has posted in his thread on his worldwide tour.

First picture you come to.

Similar but one is made in the US and the other the Isle of Mann

Both are Stirling engines and the PM research one even features on the front cover of a book all about Stirling engines.
PM research made good stuff but at reasonable prices.
