If it's the Green SW1 i'll be pleased to tell you it's worth a lot of money! especially more so boxed. By the sounds of things if it's only been fired a couple of times it should be in good condition too . The Blue version isn't worth as much but it's a very sought after model in general
Enjoy it though Col, nothing better than an SW1 in steam
|
col
|
It is the green one with a red chassis, and is in like new condition, the box is a bit scruffy though but all there and intact, youve grabbed my interest now saying it might be worth something

Well I can tell you something interesting here.
Look on the ebay board and look at the thread entitled 'crazy' you will see one in tatty condition, unboxed for 103 pounds.
So you can imagine what one in good condition and boxed would fetch on ebay . It's by far the best model! and it doesn't matter what the box is like! as long as it's present in a collectors eyes
|
col

Thanks for that, its made my day,but im afraid i probably come under a buy to keep type,as asked on another thread on here,it was a present at christmas when i was young so has sentimentle value to me, but im realy happy to hear its one of the best ones,i cant wait to give it a go,but being new to it all im not sure how to go on,with safety and procedures to fire up,its probably going to take me a while to get sorted due to work and things, but i will be definitely fireing it up as soon as i can,ill take a pic and post it if you like.

I fully understand that . I still have my first Mamod and wouldn't sell it for the world!
Just follow the instructions on your box and you should be fine!. I'll give you a small tip, just make sure everything is oiled properly and moves freely . I would love to see a picture too! they are wonderful looking machines!
Worth hanging on to Mamods are generally safe, replacing seals (washers) is advisable on all the valves (whistle, safety valve and over flow). The whistle should be ok, as they are rarely removed, the safety valve is a good idea to replace washers on though

I browsed the mamod site some time ago MM,and when i found my van i thought i would take another look,it was closed,so i keyed in mamod forums and found some ones site with this link in, just chance realy, but the unofficial word gave me hope, i also recognised some of the names on here from that site so signed up,i cant remember if i signed up on the other site?
Actually lewisop im quite interested in the static ones too,i like the look of all the tool set up, just thinking out loud , but can those tools realy be used in any way?i find the whole steam engine thing fascinating and have had an interest in steam trains and rollers ect for some time, but my imagination has been fired(sorry )with mamod and never realy apreciated what i have until recently. Are there more things that the static engines power,ie saw mills or more?i might be asking santa for something along these lines soon

Some of the tools are just for show, such as the hammer and power press, some can be used but not to power tool effect obviously.
I have a little saw:
Ived added some weight to the saw and it could possibly cut through a match stick I guess thats using them kind of .
If you like the stationary range look out for a mamod SE3

Picture of an SE3? don't mind if I do
Your TE1a and SW1 could power some tools but the SE3 would do a much better job! Twin pistons and just raw power!
Steer clear of the new stuff! If you go through the forums you'll find a load of comments relating to the poor build quality of the newer stuff!

SE3's are not made anymore unfortunately, decent second hand ones pop up from time to time!
The new Twin cylinder is the SP5 which as Mike will point out pretty poor!
40-50 for a nice SE3, the boxed ones have been doing a bit more though lately

You don't have to pay with credit cards or anything like that. You can pay by Personal cheque, or postal orders or anything like that!. You can sign up for a free account and away you go
I would say around 90% of my engines have come from ebay! it's the cheapest and biggest source of Mamods
Apart from that, you either buy them new, or off here.... then look at car boot sales I guess
|
SPOKESMAN

Junk/antique/second hand shops always worth a look.

MooseMan

Absolutely....also stick with groups like this and make useful friends! My engines used to come from EBay, now I almost exclusively buy through my little social network.
....or, save up and go to a steam fair. Steam Toys in Action, every February in Leicester, is heaven (and a surefire road to financial ruin). There are thousands of engines on display, and just as many for sale, and you can pick up some great bargains. Just leave your chequebook at home, take a fixed amount of cash instead, otherwise the consequences could be nasty indeed
....and that's only a fraction of it.....the traders' marquee (not shown here, this is the big shed) is also known as the Black Hole of Leicester - no cash can escape from its pull!

Yes... as Odilon says STIA is fantastic.... the smell of meths and oil... chance to look at and drool over all the engines... interesting chats with friendly experts... empty wallet...

Personally I think out of the new mobiles for sale the following are a good enough standard:
SR1a steam roller
TE1a traction engine
SA1 steam roadster
SAL1 Steam limosine
FE1 Fire engine
SW1 Steam wagon
Infact i'd say most if not all the newer mobiles are techinically fine. As you said above, the older models do have a higher build quality and aged feeling to them. Plus the prices are much cheaper. You can buy a second hand TE1a off ebay for around 35-40 new they must be around 80-90. Depends what YOU want in the end
The stationary models I definatly suggest buying off ebay. They can go really cheap, and again are of much better quality. Depends if you have access to ebay, but as others have said, check out antique shops and car boot sales for the REAL bargains.
If you are really getting into the whole Mamod experiance, may I suggest the book 'Mamod, the story of Malins models' which covers their history from 1936-1996 is an excellent read, and will help you determine dates, model type and what to look out for . It's around 20-30 pounds but worth any penny, and I and many would personally recommend it

It's around 20-30 pounds but worth any penny, and I and many would personally recommend it |
I agree with all that MM says there, especially about P S Malin's book - aka "The Bible". It's an excelent source of info for Mamod engines, but also a damned good read.
There is also my own humble offering which was written for the beginner and concentrates more on the practical side of the hobby. You can see details on my web site:

But the best source of information is to ask on forums like this one and the Yahoo toy_steam group.
