I think that is one of the later SE1As, real fun engine too. I would place it from the late 70s. Someone correct me if I am wrong.
I think all that one needs is a good cleaning and a burner. I sure enjoy mine.

Mister Occlusion

Right manky little thing, though all that muck and filth have probably preserved it well
I really like the SE series. Readily available for good prices and lots of fun.

Is that oil on there? If it is, there shouldn't be any rust near that engine.

Sweet...just enough crusty to make it pretty.

Some soapy water, some Brasso, some T Cut and some Car Wax and that one will look brand new
Mamodmans Web Page has real good cleaning instructions, that one isnt as bad as you all are making it sound, it is just very dirty. A cleanup not a Resto is needed.

Nice engine.
The date range for this would be 1967-1976.
It looks like it takes a meths burner. If takes a solid fuel burner, it would be 1977 model

its turned up and looking rather black also has still got its meths burner which was not stated in the listing but not complaining.
also what is the best way to clean the boiler on these do i need to unsolder the pipe work to make it easier or are there other ways. cheers will

Les Marsh

Personally I would not unsolder any of the pipework unless it was absolutely necessary.
|
willsy
|
so prob best to work around it then
|
Les Marsh
|
If possible, unless you are good at soldering.
|
johnreid

I would work around it, it will clean of more easily than you think too, just a bit of elbow grease and some polish. I think the polish that says not to use on lacquered brass is the choice to use as the lacquer is probably on there and looking bad after repeated firings.

Congratulations with this engine wilsy!

I wouldn't unsolder anything, it's way easier to clean it (with brasso wadding) with the pipes on it (and you would make the boiler dirty again by soldering them back on)

Not without removing an end cap I don't think
|
willsy
|
think will learn to live with the dent then

willsy

I thought you would have steamed it before you cleaned it.
|

Are you accident prone then?
|
willsy
|
i normally find a way to injure myself most of the time doing somethig stupid
|
Les Marsh

Just try not to burn yourself then.
|
Nick

Good way to save on Mamod decals, run them without the firebox.

Take care when polishing Willsy, its easy to disturb the soldered pipes sometimes esp if suspending them unsupported....
Some of the Mamod soldering started of well weak
Then having polished it youve gotta get it dirty soldering

Cleaning steamerIf it was me I`d drop her in a container of White Vinegar for an hour
she should come out spotless, This do`se a good job cleaning up a
Copper Boiler when I build Steam Boilers.
This will clean her out inside and out.
Works for me.
John.

boiler and pipework now good shiney and clean. brasso works like magic now just the rest to clean now will post some pics later
|
willsy
|
here it is this is as clean as could get it which lots cleaner than when i got it shame the base paint wasnt fantastic
|
Les Marsh
|
That's a vast improvement. Well done, now you can steam it and make it dirty again.
|
johnreid
|
That is a real good job. The paint on the base just means that you do not have to be afraid to use it.
|
Nick
|
It's blinding.
Great Job!
|
willsy
