Can't go far wrong with a price like that. As you say, if you don't like it then just sell it.
I keep thinking that, but I end up keeping everything!

Great buy, Lewis. As confirmed Mamodite I reckon it's OK to still tinker at the edges. I'm getting my first Jensen soon, so your not alone. Sometimes it feels good to to have a little change.

An early 1950's brass boiler upright (candlestick ) model, I think it's a 45.

Aye the #45!
Start of the Korean war it would have been made, later steel boilered ones are getting harder to find with no holes in them... or so I'm told.
I might buy one, I'm on the edge of buying one, against what I have been advised. I just can't help it though, it seems to tell me to buy it!

they the rare ones you were telling me about Jimmy?
|
James

They are KIND OF rare, but not rare at all compared to the nice cast engine frame/wood based ones from the 30's

Hay i'm learning kind of
|
flywheel61
|
James is right , most of the 45's were made with steel boilers, most of which have rusted out, as the brass was needed for shell casings for the Korean war. I think working steel boiler ones are rarer because of this.

Steel and steam
That can't be a clever combination unless you are trying to make rust.
|
James
|
Yeah, they got holes in thr boiler, water dripped out onto the heating element and made it basically scrap.
All this stuff I have learnt off Rog and Steve. If I cocked up please correct me

Our American forum friends could be a good source of advice before you make up your mind to buy it or not. I think I know where you can get 220v elements to fit them.

Lewis, I can't believe it was so cheap...I really can't. Streamgranny's got one
of those, I think. I believe it has a center flue boiler so it heats up fast.
Heck, you'll probably make money if you sell it. Well done.

Can he fire it though? Might rust through?
|

Chuck, he got it for the RRP I think.

I asked Rog, I asked Steve, they advised me not to buy the #45. I can't help it, I'm drawn to it

Pay for what you get? I dread to think how much they actually cost to make/build? MY guess is around 3 pounds.....
|
James
|
Dunno.
They don't look too bad to me, a Wilesco lover. I might buy one at a later date.
I just hope Lewis hates his so he can sell me it cheap

If i bought a Wilesco it would be a decent one.....Even then they aren't as good as Jensens.....A poor mans Jensen maybe?
|
James
|
Dunno. I like em both anyway.
|
flywheel61
|
James, if you like the Jensen 45# so much, why don't you wait and see if you can get a brass boiler one. Maybe Rog, Cedge or Jensen steamman could help. I'll also see if the bloke who's selling me this one could get another but would probably be around GPB 80-100.00 plus postage.. Remember steam engines in OZ fetch pretty high prices.
Apparently the way to test if they're brass or steel is to hold a magnet against the boiler & see what happens.
Cheers

I don't know which is rarer, brass or a good steel one, as steel are getting fewer. There is a steel one for sale from Steve

Buy one you can use
|
James

Naa, they all burn holes in the surface they are used on, so none of them are REALLY usable.

They ain't powerful at all. Maybe couldn't even power one tool. Or so I'm told.

MM wrote

Exactly. The steel ones are probably rarer, or will get rare, but common sense tells me to get a brass one if you are going to run it because the steel one's rust out.

Will hopefully pick it up next week, & will then run it & put up pics. Thanks for the warning re burning the surface they are used on. Will run mine on bricks or concrete.

Yep, that's correct. I also bought it because I found one cheap, because I like verticals but can't afford a 'real' one and something about it appealed to me. Hasn't Roly got one too? I'm sure I encountered a write-up on his site. And probably same boiler as used in Wilesco's African Queen.
It does have a central flue, that I only discovered when I stuck my nose over the boiler The piston & crank couldn't be of simpler construction & very basic & you can chuck away the little plastic chimney cowl!
Haven't tried driving an accessory with it yet but runs longer than expected & there's a video of it in the video section. It's not going to rival a Jensen, a Bowman or an SE3 anytime soon but I'm keeping mine
