New steam engine...

Hi Guys!

We have just bought a whole lot of Meccano and amongst it was a nice clean Mamod/Meccano stream engine. We Have several Meccano Steam engines but this is the first one that requires solid fuel pellets.

Should we just go out and buy some of the Mamod pellets, is there something else we should use or can we just use one of our meths burners?

Meths will work fine.
The change to pellets was made from an OHS front only.
The only thing is it probably won't have the bumps in the base to hold the meths burner in place, but some bent up tin fitted in the fiorebox would fix that, or some scrap Meccano.

If you don't use meths, I'd get Esbit. But DON'T EVER USE MAMOD TABLETS! THEY'RE TERRIBLE!

What's Esbit? I Googled it and it looks like it is some kind of camping fuel??? Is it available in small quantities and where can I buy some?

You should be able to buy it at a local hobby store. It's the third product down on this page:
http://www.ministeam.com/acatalog/Esbit.html
It burns far better than Mamod tablets, and without all the horrible smell.

Well done Ralph. That's a nice SP3.

For Esbit, if you choose to go down that path don't use ministeam, but rather Forest as he is a great dealer and in your country.

I've found Esbit also to have the awful smell, it doesn't burn long and can leave a residue.

A normal mamod burner would be better. You can get one here

http://www.mamodparts.com/spares-Burners.asp

It says TE1a/SR1a type, but that is the one you want

Thanks for the links, The Forest site looks interesting...

I have a couple of the spirit burners so I will give it a go using one of those. I don't like the sound of those solid fuel tablets.

Above is a picture of one of our other engines running 'light' at Henley using a spirit burner - This one goes like the clappers. The photograph was taken using flash and it still could not freeze the motion!

Nice SP3 Ralph, there werent many made compared to the MEC1 with the yellow base. Some have black cranks and others like yours, Im not sure which were first.
Dr. Rog

SP3 is worth having for the rarity value. Quality had taken a dip by then but a good one should be as good as any other Mamod.

These modern fuel tablets are OK. just use three at a time.

however if you have a burner that fits the lugs in the base using that will be easier.

I like the SP3 and run mine with an older meths burner from my MEC1
DouglasC

This is really interesting. I was under the impression that the SP3 was never marketed as a 'Meccano' steam engine. Yet your engine has the Meccano transfer and not a Mamod one.
Ralph Laughton

Hi Douglas,

This one has a Mamod transfer on one side and the Meccano one on the other...

My SP3 is the same - Meccano on one side and Mamod on the other
DouglasC

Well, well, well.

This makes sense, now that I think about it, as the cardboard box described the engine as the 'Mamod Meccano SP3' steam engine.
MrMamod

Mine also has the MAMOD transfer one side and the MECCANO one on the other side.
