Newbie saying HiHi All,
I just put a bid on a crusty old Namod engine in need of attention. I'll probably wonder why I did when I take delivery (assuming I win... which I probably will, given the state of the thing).
Anyway, I just finished reading Fred - Fred Dibnah's biography and I guess I got inspired to have a go with steam... starting small
I also have a lovely little Stirling engine from Bohm which I built from a kit. I've also done loads of motor work, rebuilding a Mondeo Zetec so at least I'm not starting from "what's a spanner?".
Anyway, that's me for now, Cheers!

Ha! It doesn't end till tomorrow. And today I got an email from the search I have registered - there's another little engine exactly the same as the one I bid except it works and it's complete and it's currently up at £0.99 rather than the £9.99 I bid on the non-working, non-complete one!!! Hmmm, hoping I *don't* win now!! Ah well, the whole point was to get a fixxer-upper rather than a working one and the good one will probably fetch a good price before it goes.
Anyways, if I do win I'll be loking for a bit of advice on cleaning the little beasty up... but I wont ask yet until I know whether I've got it. Reckon I might take a few 'before and after' shots too - all part of enjoying the project!!
Cheers,
Dave

That´s right ! Before and after photoshots are very welcome here !
Sometimes you may wonder: This dirty rustbucket turns out to be such a nice engine ? ! Is it the same one ?!
That´s a well known situation for the most of the forum members. A prominent example is Pendo pilot and his lost and forgotten MAMOD SL1 LOCO ! He lost it nearly 20 year ago in the garden and found it after that long period late last year. It was totally scrappy and rusted and now it is better than new ! I like stories with a happy ending !
cheers Joe

Well chaps, I didn't get the first one I bid on... but I just grabbed this one:
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAP...amp;ssPageName=ADME:B:BCA:GB:1123
We'll see if it works when it gets here. It's not as crusty as the first one I bid on but it obviously needs a clean-up. It has the burner which is handy.
Any advice at all much appreciated. I'm wondering:
- if it works!!! Kinda hoping it doesn't
- how I'll get it apart and how far to disassemble it (don't really wanna detach pipes unless necessary)
- what's the best way to get it all polished up.
- whether to re-paint. If so, how to choose paint/colour.
- what to do about Namod signage. Obvioulsy want to keep it - maybe just mask it off and repaint round it and buff it up as best I can...
Oh what fun.
Cheers,
Dave

Well done- best is to have a good slow look when it arrives- you never can tell whats what till then.
Theres quite a bit of solder on the boiler in the second picture, not sure what thats about. The decal is good, and I would see what the firebox is like before doing anything with it.
The burner looks interesting- Im not too sure its an MM1 type though, Ive onle seen vap burners, wicks and trays for MM1s.
