Next project, PM research engine

Now that I've got the Jeanerette running I'm leaving the rest as is for the time being and have decided to build my PM research stationary engine kit 3BIM that I've had sitting around for a bit.

Now the first decision that needs to be made is what colour to paint it.
I think the base will be Mid Brunswick green or something similar.
The flywheel hub and spokes red with the rim staying brass with the rest left unpainted.
What do you all think?

Tony- that should come up a treat- look forward to seeing the finished engine.

Looks great.  Does it all just bolt together as is?   No machining etc required?

Your colour scheme sounds good,  will you try and do some 'piping' on the flywheel arms?
Les

It sounds good but I like my engines blue and black and if you do not like the finished colours it can always be repainted.

No machining required although I may take the sharp edges off the sides of the flywheel and yes its just a paint and bolt together job.

I don't actually have a boiler for this engine but saw it on ebay a couple of months back with a BIN of $80 OZ and at that price I couldn't pass on it.

I won't be doing any pin striping on the flywheel mainly because I couldn't paint a straight line to save my life.

I read nothing but good reviews of the PM engines. A fine addition to your collection.

Tony this whistlle would suit that engine-

I also have a PM research Rider engine, got it from the same guy.
He actually did very well out of me.
When I visitted him to pick the engines up I also bought 4 books $100 worth of brass silver steel and ali off him. Metal cutting power band saw, keyless chuck for my lathe, fly cutters, V blocks, knurling tool , metric reamers and even bought my lathe through him as he was kitting out a new workshop so placed my order with him and we got a volume discount on all our gear. Oh and did I mention the guy married me too.

He was the celebrant for my wedding 6 years ago, small world isn't it.

Need to get a boiler for it too.
Trying to decide whether to buy a kit or have a go at making it myself from scratch.

I've got one of those sitting in a box waiting to fit to my second Mamod loco. I purchased that from there just a few weeks ago.
Still got a couple of other parts I want to get for that loco and I'm saving that for a Spring project.

I think I would want something a bit bigger, more like your new boiler.

I've thought that you could make a stencil somehow and then it should be an easy job.  But that's just theory at the moment.

Wonder if Mrs Tony might have a steady hand with a paint brush, but look out as she might end up liking Steam engines and you would end up accumulating many more. Lord forbid that happen

Not likely.
She would probably pass out from complete lack of interest before she even got the brush to the engine.

She really likes it when I get inspiration to make new jewellery but is completely uninterested in all my stationary engines.

Yes thats exactly what I want but I may have a go at building one myself (or a slightly simpler one) as I have all the material and equipment just need the skills now.

Just figured I would mention I make nice boilers.  I have 2" brass, and 3"copper.  If you provide the fittings, I will put it together.

Or I can make a 3" tank, and you can drill, and tap the holes you need.

Boilers and the like...

Typical.

Mine kind of like the Wilesco, though.
