NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!

Had to rush home early from work today as the wife rang me to tell me the lawn sprinklers were on.

You may not think this is a very big problem but a few weeks ago I removed them from the watering schedule and in the process of shifting fill down for my workshop broke a pipe too.
Wasn't worried as I was planning on ripping it up in a few months and getting it all done again.

It seems the solenoid actually split which opened the valve and turned the water on for that section by itself.
I would say before my wife noticed it several thousand litres of water must of rushed out and down my path to my workshop which I hadn't finished stabilising to the pavers I laid. It reached them and turned right and rushed to the end of my retaining wall and then washed out about 1 cubic meter of fill and one 60Kg block from my wall has now fallen down.
I think I've managed to stabilise the ground so the next block won't fall now.

Atleast my water proofing on the shed worked pretty well.

The soil that washed down the slope hit the corner of the workshop and built up about 10cm above floor level but luckily only about 1 litre of water actually managed to get into the workshop by washing in inbetween the colourbond sheets on the wall and nothing was damaged in my workshop.

Now I'm faced with the task of digging out the foundations for the last block on my wall, reseating the 60Kg block and then getting more fill delivered and carting it down to replace what got wash away.

Not happy.................................

Tony, I feel for you.  It's a shame the rest of us seem to be on the other side of OZ.  It is, however, good news that very little water made its wqay into the shed.

I understand what you're saying about the cubic metre of fill.  A few years ago, I shifted 3 metres of fill with a barrow.  Unknown to me, a neighbour had built an illegal drain, putting his stormwater through out property.  The next storm moved about a metre of the fill.

Oh Tony!

What a thing to happen!
Another setback, with the end in sight......

As someone said, why should any job go right, just to please us...

Hope it turns out easier to fix than it seems at the moment.

Good luck!

The real annoying thing is I just finished shifting 2 cubic meters down there to level off all around the shed.

I was planning to get another 2 cubic meters delivered this week to level off the ground on the low side of the retaining wall to get it ready for some topsoil to plant some grass so now I will be ordering 3 cubic meters. I only need to shift it all in wheel barrows down 6 meters and across 40 meters.
Bogstandard

Tony,

My heart feels for you.

But turn this into an advantage.

You have found and cured a fault, that if it had happened later, after you had finished all the work, might have caused even more heartache.

Imagine what it could have done if it had happened in the middle of the night.

Think how much fitter you will be after moving that extra fill.

That is three 'feel betters' already.

It's amazing how a glass of red wine makes me blind to the typos until I've had another glass

I suppose it's just as well that it's downhill.  Mine was about a 1.5m rise.  The sloping block looked like such a great thing when we bought it.

YIKES! That has to be a nightmare. SO glad that it wasnt worse, but it sure has to be a royal PITA for you.
At least you arent bored.

Sorry to hear that Tony, a case of bad luck I guess

As bogstandard said.

Too, it makes me feel fortunate to live on dead flat land.
I was reading about retaining walls recently, a subject alien to my experience;
had never appreciated before their need and their construction.
Glad you found out that a big rain could do the same as this sprinkler leak, and so can forestall that,
but does it ever downpour there?

Sorry for your setback.  It's still better than living in Kansas....
or Lincolnshire? Or Miami, for sure of that!

Rain could possibly do the same and I've always known that and had a plan to divert runoff but needed to finish the paving first and was planning to install the kerbing to divert the water in about 3 or 4 weeks but the burst pipe beat me to it.
IndianaRog

Small consolation Tony, but at least you know the path now that the water will take, so if/when you get flooding rains you will know how best to divert the flow.  Still a lousy break mate.
Les

Not a nice thing to happen, but at you know where to put the kerbing now.

We wouldn't let you stay James.
Just because we used to let convicts in doesn't mean we have to lower our standard that far.
johnreid

Do you have any drainage tiles and weep holes in your wall?

MooseMan

Sounds messy Tony - sorry to hear about that!
Wallace

Sorry to hear it Tony.

Hope you aren't on a user pays for water system over there

Wow, sorry to hear that Tony, don't hurt yourself getting that block back it.  There must have been some preasure to move a 60kg block,     .

Cheers

It wasn't the water pressure it just washed all the ground away from under the block and as this was the last one on the end and was only put in as an after thought by the builder it didn't have a proper foundation under it so the brick was just left hanging in the air and the weight of it made it fall down and yes we are on a user pays system for the water.
I supose on the plus side I have had that section of retic turned off all summer so the water lost is probably equal to the amount I would of used if I had it turned on for the summer.

Yes haven't fixed it yet but have figured out what needs to be done.
Was meant to fix it today but instead decided to play with my lathe.
