The names, and classes came about as the engines were built at the very end of WW2. They were split up into:
Merchant Navy class (before WW2)
Battle of Britain class
West Country class

A Merchant Navy Class engine would be named after Mail Ships, Shipping Companies etc. For example, the first of the class was named 'Channel Packet'
Battle of Britain engines were named after squadrons, types of planes etc. e.g. 92 Squadron
West Country engines were named after towns, villages and cities in the West Country (Devon, Somerset etc.) No. 21C123 being 'Blackmoor Vale'.
Graham-Jilly

thanks for that you certainly are a wealth of knowledge MTA

there are no difference between the bob and west country classes apart from the names and other little things

How true! They made a joke about Norfolk and Cars on 'Have I got News for you" last week:

"Cars are now so common place in Norfolk, that locals have stopped pointing at them"
