When you do, if that pitting still remains, give it a smear of P38 filler and sand it smooth before priming.
I've a feeling it's just the old paint though. |
ITs pitting Sandy!
Ive just bought me some fibre glass filler going to try it this week

James, really nice piece of work...you have returned it to it's correct colors and it looks great. I especially like how the base turned out...it was pretty rough but looks grand now.

just had a thought.
does a standard Mamod safety valve fit the thread in the boiler, if not it would prove that the boiler was originally intended for a Hobbies version.
|
James
|
A Mamod one fits
|
MamodFan
|
must be a later version hobbies sv you have. one of mine is a larger thread size, interesting
|
James

I don't really think there are all any 2 SE4s the same!
You have an SE4?

i said hobbies sv not se4

A mamod one fits in mine and I have the same valve as that one, I know mine is a mamod version as the seller insured me it was those colours before the restoration
These were hand built, anything went

unusual to change the size of thread though, interesting development

Nothing but the whistles seem to fit in their own threads so not sure what they were?
Chimney is "rough" on that SE2 as is the soldering, must have been one of the first when he was learning the trade?

Can you throw it as far as Nuneaton?
My chimneys aren't great, kind of look like my first and only EVER attempt at making one
Wood i like i get on with it, it gets on with me, but metal

you think this one is bad, i have seen boiler endcaps that look like bottle tops, one that the length of the cap flange varies from about 2mm to 6mm and bases that look like they have been drilled by a blind man. I have even seen a pre war twin that wont run my one showed it up and ran like a sewing machine.

I am way too new to this hobby to have the appreciation of how rare these engines are.. You seem very happy and proud- Good for you !! and a nice job on the repaint and clean up - I love that green color on the engine frame- Mamod had good taste in that hue!!
Congratulations

Thanks!!
You'll soon come to learn that the SE4 is THE engine to own, I've been longing for one for nigh on 3 years now

James that is a great improvement (getting back to your before after pics).

looks good mate
one think is it a mamod or a hobbies se4 ?
im guessing a mamod as it has the whsitle etc and you have painted the frames the correct mamod colour

Nice one James, you really have returned this rare engine back to a status it is worthy of.

I think the boilers vary ever so slightly in length.
I know when I had Chris' one here is was shorter in length, and i've seen a couple of other Hobbies boilers that are shorter.
Not 100% sure though!

Very close inspection of the engine when stripping may have proved useful with evidence of its past. It would have been the only sure way to tell.

Looking good, what a great engine. Why'd they quit making 'em?
Or better yet, what's stopping them from doing an updated re-issue?
|
James
|
Cheers Chuck!
Probably because they would NEVER cast the engine frames from brass now, they could never match the quality!
They stopped making them because of the war
|
Sandman

I think sometime in the future we may get a surprise.
Mamodfan has been experimenting with some pretty exciting stuff lately.
I wouldn't rule out a replica SE4.

Cost, simple as that really Chuck.
They sort of did an updated one just after the war. One ever made the 'proto-type SE4'. Had a square burner tank, bigger base, mounted on wooden feet, and a base for the engine frames.
It was never put into production because it was too expensive to make. Now in this present day it wouldn't pass safety tests
Jimbo, go fire it

I hate to say it, but are you doing anything about that unsightly solder around the lubricator and where the steam pipe leaves the boiler?

Pre-war mamods did have untidy solder but I think someone has been at that one a bit....

They are brass Alan, if you look at MMs lovely SE3 you can see the brass in one or 2 chips of paint on the frames. Some post war mamods had brass frames, but spose was too costly to make for long after the war.

thats nice that is
|
James

Naa not run her yet, I'm going to spray the firebox with VHT gloss black first which I'll do as soon as I feel a bit better!
The cast brass frames were made up until 1948!

Ahh - that makes sense! I do like the cast frames rather than the cheaper pressed steel ones.
|

Guys, I stripped the Se4 down again the other day.
The firebox has now been repainted heatproof gloss black (very big thanks to Atticman). I'm also going to be replacing the O rings in the engine's steam pipes so I tomorrow.
I'll get her built up and steamed with her new paint and steamtight pipes!!
Stay tuned...

Yup main thing is you have all the original parts like the whistle, counter shaft gear and piston rods, they can't be replicated easily!
|
James
|
Aye lad!
The only real problem is the solder, which in all honesty isn't that bad
When I was buying one I told myself not to buy one which has been tampered with by having the wrong parts fitted. I'm real pleased I did now

Aye solder is difficult to remove and tidy up in some areas. The original soldering wasn't great on these engines but no more should be added!
Soldering is easier than replacing missing parts!

Not easy but as Steve has shown they are possible to recreate using "things" lurking around the house
