WIll do that

Jimbo, have you stripped the base yet??

When you do, if that pitting still remains, give it a smear of P38 filler and sand it smooth before priming.

I've a feeling it's just the old paint though.

ITs pitting Sandy!

Ive just bought me some fibre glass filler going to try it this week
James

See the SE4 thread in the restorations board

steamyjim

Well done!
bessytractor

good grief James

thats hellfire!!!!!!!!
James

LOL Thanks very much!
IndianaRog

James, really nice piece of work...you have returned it to it's correct colors and it looks great.  I especially like how the base turned out...it was pretty rough but looks grand now.
James

Cheers Rog
MamodFan

just had a thought.
does a standard Mamod safety valve fit the thread in the boiler, if not it would prove that the boiler was originally intended for a Hobbies version.
James

A Mamod one fits
MamodFan

must be a later version hobbies sv you have. one of mine is a larger thread size, interesting
James

I don't really think there are all any 2 SE4s the same!

You have an SE4?
MamodFan

i said hobbies sv not se4

Mamodman123

MamodFan wrote:

A mamod one fits in mine and I have the same valve as that one, I know mine is a mamod version as the seller insured me it was those colours before the restoration

These were hand built, anything went
MamodFan

unusual to change the size of thread though, interesting development

Nothing but the whistles seem to fit in their own threads so not sure what they were?

Chimney is "rough" on that SE2 as is the soldering, must have been one of the first when he was learning the trade?

I dont want a crappy one best I throw it away and get another

Can you throw it as far as Nuneaton?

My chimneys aren't great, kind of look like my first and only EVER attempt at making one

Wood i like i get on with it, it gets on with me, but metal
MamodFan

you think this one is bad, i have seen boiler endcaps that look like bottle tops, one that the length of the cap flange varies from about 2mm to 6mm and bases that look like they have been drilled by a blind man. I have even seen a pre war twin that wont run  my one showed it up and ran like a sewing machine.
James

If you need a chimney making I'm your man
mc_mc

Oi! stop taking the mick out of my boiler caps.   They have rustic "charm".
mogogear

I am way too new to this hobby to have the appreciation of how rare these engines are.. You seem very happy and proud- Good for you !! and a nice job on the repaint and clean up - I love that green color on the engine frame- Mamod had good taste in that hue!!

Congratulations
James

Thanks!!

You'll soon come to learn that the SE4 is THE engine to own, I've been longing for one for nigh on 3 years now
MamodFan

Not talking about you, What I should have said was
You think this is bad I have seen MAMOD boiler endcaps................
Wallace

James that is a great improvement (getting back to your before after pics).

Best thing is at least now you can fire it without the paint combusting
James

LMAO!

Thanks guys
Lewis

looks good mate

one think is it a mamod or a hobbies se4 ?

im guessing a mamod as it has the whsitle etc and you have painted the frames the correct mamod colour
Griffin

Nice one James, you really have returned this rare engine back to a status it is worthy of.
James

Thanks meyarts!!

Lewis, I'm 95% sure she's a Mamod

I think the boilers vary ever so slightly in length.

I know when I had Chris' one here is was shorter in length, and i've seen a couple of other Hobbies boilers that are shorter.

Not 100% sure though!
MamodFan

Very close inspection of the engine when stripping may have proved useful with evidence of its past. It would have been the only sure way to tell.
James

Well there was no hope of finding any paint!!
Mamodman123

I found traces of bright red paint under mine when i stripped it!
James

There were a few little tiny bits of light red, but not alot!
MamodFan

bits

Just off down to the post box, thunderstorm has finally passed over.
James

Sounds good! Thanks!
James

Here's some better pics

steamgranny

That looks lovely James & seems you finally made an excellent job of the base.
Looking forward to its inaugural steam
Nick

Looks great James, but I agree, fire it up!
James

Thanks!

This one WILL be steamed
Stilldrillin

YES!

It`s the time to fire it now......
Nick

When?
James

Patience Mr Bond
oldstuff

Looking good, what a great engine. Why'd they quit making 'em?
Or better yet, what's stopping them from doing an updated re-issue?
James

Cheers Chuck!

Probably because they would NEVER cast the engine frames from brass now, they could never match the quality!

They stopped making them because of the war
Sandman

I think sometime in the future we may get a surprise.

Mamodfan has been experimenting with some pretty exciting stuff lately.

I wouldn't rule out a replica SE4.

Cost, simple as that really Chuck.

They sort of did an updated one just after the war. One ever made the 'proto-type SE4'. Had a square  burner tank, bigger base, mounted on wooden feet, and a base for the engine frames.

It was never put into production because it was too expensive to make. Now in this present day it wouldn't pass safety tests

Jimbo, go fire it
Les

That does look nice James.
James

Thanks
johnreid

James

I have some new pics with it's new level plug! Will post up in a mo
James

All finished now, with new overflow plug and MF wick

steamyjim

Brilliant James!
Griffin

Even better pics, they really show this engine off.  A real credit to you, that is one of the nicest SE4's around.
James

Thankyou very much inded Griff
Nick

Looks great!

Now fire it!
Les

Thats good, fire it and then do the draw.
Mamodman123

Go fire it

Looks much better with the proper level plug. No more bolt
johnreid

Really good job there James, are you going to wait till the box is done to fire it?

Wheres the Video?
Mamodman123

Fire it!

We relegated Scunny for you today so i'm calling in a favour
James

Really lad??

Party!

I'll do it tomorrow, been too busy today!

we sent em down to your tin pot league

Look forward to the video lad!
MTA

You have worked wonders on that one Jimbo

I hate to say it, but are you doing anything about that unsightly solder around the lubricator and where the steam pipe leaves the boiler?
Mamodman123

Pre-war mamods did have untidy solder but I think someone has been at that one a bit....

Up to James
James

LMFAO MM! I just emailed me mate to wind him up! Scunny down, Donny up!

Aye MTA, I'll tidy it up eventually!

Thanks

Looks fantastic James!
James

Thanks Steve
Wallace

Top Job James.

It has really turned into a nice engine mate. Well done.

You are firing it aren't you?
James

Aye, probably today
MamodFan

Been away for a bit,
Does it run, is there a vid?
alan2525

Are those frames cast iron? Looks very nice, fair bit nicer than the thin old pressed steel ones on the later stationaries!
Atticman

They are brass Alan, if you look at MMs lovely SE3 you can see the brass in one or 2 chips of paint on the frames. Some post war mamods had brass frames, but spose was too costly to make for long after the war.
http://modelsteam.myfreeforum.org/ftopic10598-0.php
pauly

thats nice that is
James

Naa not run her yet, I'm going to spray the firebox with VHT gloss black first which I'll do as soon as I feel a bit better!

The cast brass frames were made up until 1948!

Ahh - that makes sense! I do like the cast frames rather than the cheaper pressed steel ones.
James

Guys, I stripped the Se4 down again the other day.

The firebox has now been repainted heatproof gloss black (very big thanks to Atticman). I'm also going to be replacing the O rings in the engine's steam pipes so I tomorrow.

I'll get her built up and steamed with her new paint and steamtight pipes!!

Stay tuned...
Mamodman123

Watching with anticipation lad

Not everyday you see an SE4 in steam!
James

STIA next year there will be mine, yours, and who knows who will join or get one before Feb?? Then we can steam them all together

Can't wait to steam her!!

there's an offer you can't refuse

Aye they run like a dream lad! savor the moment
James

Thing is though lad, I wish they had a regulator! That's the only thing that an SE4 could imporve on!
Mamodman123

James wrote:

Aye lad, most of the bowmans don't have them either....

I'm not complaining a restored one went for 500 didn't it? other week?
James

Over I think!

Got mine at the right time
Mamodman123

James wrote:

Yup main thing is you have all the original parts like the whistle, counter shaft gear and piston rods, they can't be replicated easily!
James

Aye lad!

The only real problem is the solder, which in all honesty isn't that bad

When I was buying one I told myself not to buy one which has been tampered with by having the wrong parts fitted. I'm real pleased I did now

Aye solder is difficult to remove and tidy up in some areas. The original soldering wasn't great on these engines but no more should be added!

Soldering is easier than replacing missing parts!

Not easy but as Steve has shown they are possible to recreate using "things" lurking around the house
Must admit the whistles are a pain
James

Yeah! Steve works wonders!

Yup can't be easily replicated without the proper know how and tools.

I wouldn't stand a chance!
johnreid

I cant wait to see it.
James

LOL I might have a little treat for you too
