... yep, mate! That's a good plan! Jus' take yer time, mate. Whenyer done, givver another 12 hours ta' rest, then steam' er up.
James
Aye mate! I'd rather wait 24 hours more to steam it after assembly, than steam her and have to repaint her taking 4 more days!
Mamodman123
Looking good mate!
Using Ford colours too
just make sure you bake them well so it stays like that! Just one thing, remove the paint off the bottom edge of the engine frame! They weren't painted

Oh aye lad! Not along the top then?

Amazing transformation on that base! I really need to do that one day on my badly-pitted Latimer.
Engine supports now very elegant in their original livery & looking forward to seeing it finished, in all its glory.

Getting better everyday mate. Top stuff
James

Taken the paint off the bottom of the frames! Paint on base still a bit soft, so will leave it a bit longer before baking!
Firebox won't need baking... stands up to 500 degrees!
James
Bit of an update!
The engine is built up but nothing is fastened down yet.

Thats a vast improvement. Well done.

Don't think so lad, it just seems unproffessional to me. You could turn it too far with a screw driver and that would be game over.
got a piccy wicky?

Try boiling water over it first lad! then cold water, if its been glued in then the glue may perish if you steam it. If its soldered in then oh no
James
Not soldered lad! Oi oi
I heard a rattling in the boiler...
Tipped it upside down...
Loads of sand and little stones came out

Feck me 200 degrees, thats too hot for crappy Halfords Paint. I had some success at 140. You are better off using proper paint, ie not from Halfords

To give you an idea J, proper stove enamel paint as used originally is baked off at 120. It is very hard and durable.
Car paint is not the ideal paint for stem engines, particularly bases as it is not very resistant to meths. It is good because of the range of colours available though.
Looking at your pics of the base it appears that you have a very thick coat of paint on there, the reflection in the paint around the holes gives it away. Did you spray one heavy coat or several light coats?
James
Loads of light coats!
Mamodman123
200 for the firebox, ive never been above 150 for a base
Its completely heat resistant at that temperature, not sure about meths resistant though....
James
Oh balls, you could have said
Mamodman123
| James wrote: | Oh balls, you could have said |
you could have asked
think about it lad, the base won't get that hot will it?
Actually Ive asked MF if he'll get mine stove painted or whatever with the next batch of his engines that way its meths and heat resistant and will last my lifetime (I don't plan on living that long)
James
Well bugger me!! LOL!
How much is that costing you?
MamodFan
one offs are never cheap, especially when they have to colour match paint
waiting for a quote to come back
James
Oh aye! Might end up being a 2 off
johnreid
This is how you learn isnt it? No real harm done, just some wasted effort, and if you learned something, the effort isnt wasted then is it?
James
Very wise John!
Naaa nowt wasted!
Don't matter either

I don't mind paying a reasonable amount aslong as its nothing stupid!
My own peace of mind then
johnreid
James could probably rerepaint and watch the temperature and end up in good shape if he doesnt want to send it out for work. I wish I never made any errors, but then again I wouldnt know much then either. Keep your chin up mate it isnt all that bad.

Sorry to hear of your troubles James.
Anyway, at least it's all learning.
Just incredible the boiler had sand in it. I warned elswhere that the burner might, but not the boiler
Still though, looking forward to the progress
James

Yeah, Ill crank the big girthy spray gun up in a bit and use proper tractor paint!
James

Update!
Base sanded down to bare metal, primed, 1st layer of paint applied. All looks great bar one run on the underside (who cares about that?)
