SR1 has arrived-- help with the date?So my bargain SR1 arrived on saturday, I have started to polish the wheels and cylinder and whistle, it really isn't in terrible condition. The firebox is bad but I will do my best to shine it up.
Here are some pics, can anyone get a good date on it? It has definite characteristics of the 63 type I think like the logo, engine frame, single handle filler screw, and piston. But the screw that connects to the steering rod is the hexagonal type like on the later models according to the evolution of the SR1 thread by Griffin. You can see that screw in the corner of one of the pics

Nice one.
I picked up exactly the same roller last year and I think members on the forum told me it was dated 1961-63.
My firebox was even worse than that. However, you will find that the baked-on gunk will come off. I used autosol and a lot of elbow grease. Be careful if you remove the wheels. I ended up breaking two of the caps and they are nearly impossible to replace

Thanks for answering stitch, I don't think I want to risk the caps as the sides aren't too badly rusted, its mainly just the top thats bad.

That one will clean up a treat TK.
As for a date, I think you are about right with 63.
I have noticed the earlier rollers do not have the "Fix scuttle here" sticker on the back of the firebox, so this is another indication of age relating. I am guessing a bit here but I think that sticker came into use around 64/65
