Cloth Electric Cord

This arrived today.
250 feet of new old stock cloth electric cord, 16 guage, 2 wire.
It is perfect for some of my restoration projects. I laid a sniper bid on it in the last
half minute and it came to me for $62 (US) including shipping.
This ought to last me a long time.

Me too.

Is it an exact match for the original cord used on the old Jensens?

Good question. The answer is both YES and NO !

It is exactly like some, similar to some, and a bit different than some. Bottom line here is Jensen did not always use the same cord. There are some color and pattern variations and no particular pattern or color absolutely fits only a certain model or year that we are aware of. The wire I just got, as you see in the picture is stamped 1957 but you would be very hard pressed to say it did not belong on an early Jensen, Weeden, Empire or any other old appliance. Jensen bought whatever the supplier had at the time and possibly the most cost effective at the moment.

More specifically then, would it be appropriate for the Jensen 25 I bought from you?  The existing cord has the insulation broken close to the engine and I would like to replace it with something authentic.

BTW;  My shipment of simichrome just arrived and that Jensen 25 has never looked so good since it's been here .

All the best.

Semichrome is the best

I know

I already finished one of the four tubes
johnreid

Like the old Brylcream commercials,    a Little Dab'l Do Ya
It shouldnt take much to polish something up, I have barely made a dent in my tube and have done all of my Steam Engines and a Copper Cook set. A whole tube that quickly sounds like you might be using too much.

Gil, what years did the cloth cords come on Jensens? Most of the ones from the 1050s that I see have the black plastic (  or is it hard rubber ) cords that have dried up and cracked. Did the cloth cords get used through the 40s?

Richard, The right cord for your 1950's #25 is black rubber. The cord you have is the original. Cloth cords were used 1932 through 1948 and it is believed around 1949 rubber cords were introduced along with red straight handles replacing the black ones.
