Australian Engines

I have been planning on doing a group photo of my Austrlian engines but I just haven't got round to it so instead I will just grace you all with individual photos of all my OZ engines.

Kookaburra Overtype

Steamco STC-1

My yet to be restored Parken / Haussegger

Renown Steam Roller

Renown windmill, it will be a long term restoration project

My two Renown verticals

Three Scorpion Verticals so you get three photos.

Scorpion Horizontal Restored

My unrestored Scorpion Horizontal

And lastly my unrestored Jeanerette

Excluding the Steamco and Kookaburra engines all the rest where made from 40 to 70 years ago and all are hard to get hold of compared to British engines.
The most common model is the Renown Vertical but there still has only been 8 turn up on ebay in the last 18 months.
Something a bit different to Mamods to collect.

If you would like to know more look at my website in my signature

bessytractor

thanks for sharing Tony

I love the "seal of quality" one
TRAPPERKEEPER

They look great tony, the Scorpion verticals are my favorites

Not knowing anything about Australian engines, what makes an engine a 'donkey' engine?
Sandman

Great collection Tony.

A real piece of your countries heritage there mate.

Great to see.
James

They're all great! That Kookaburra is really nice! Where can I buy one from??

If you need chimneys making for the Scorpians, let me know and I'll help!
johnreid

A truly fine collection.
Kritika

Do they come up often - down under?
Atticman

What a great collection there Tony

I notice that the steamco STC-1 has obviously taken a lot of insperation from mamod amd bowman

Great range there Tony, now your underway with your lathe work, hopefully we'll see some more completed restorations.  I wonder waht the story is with the change from Parken to Hausegger.

Cheers

I think the connotation goes back to the early days when donkeys and work-horses were replaced by small stationary steam engines and the name has stuck and has been transfered to toy steam emgines.  I can still remember, in my childhood, almost 60 years ago, that small toy steam engines were always refered to as 'donkey' engines.

Thanks flywheel, I like the name

Thanks everyone I will try and answer all the questions.

TRAPPERKEEPER flywheel has already explained the donkey engine name and its origins, I also think it was used on hit and miss engines in the US too.

James, if you want a Kookaburra engine you will need deep pockets.
I got this for a bargain off ebay and its the only one I've ever seen come up for sale second hand but here is their website.

I think the Steamco got it's inspiration from the Parken engine as they were made in the same city but the Parken about 20 or 30 years earlier so was probably the childhood toy of the Steamco makers.

Also you are right the Steam roller does Mamod wheels on it as the original ones were lost a long time ago on this engine as was the large pulley which I only a few months ago managed to get hold of so I'm always on the looked for some original ones.

Kritika
The Renown rollers are fairly rare. Only three have come up on ebay in the last 18 months and they are commanding high prices in complete condition going for between $500 and $650 for a complete one. Hence why I've got the one that needs a it of work as I got out bid on the other too.
I suspect if one comes up on ebay you will be going head to head with flywheel and Manxman for it as I know Manxman wants one and as flywheel has got a Renown windmill and Vertical in very good condition I'm guessing he will be wanting a roller to complete the 'set'

Glad you all enjoyed the photos.

Ah, great seeing 'em all together, Tony. They're all wonderful, too.

That Kookaburra impresses me more each time I see it.

The simple layouts of the Parken and Scorpion Horizontal are giving me ideas.

You already know I like the Scorpion and Renown verticals,
but...now I've got a crush on that Jeanerette.

I'd be well pleased with that lot, as I'm sure you are!
tmuir

Chuck the Jeanerette predates the Renown and Scorpion by atleast 10 years, maybe more and was certainly the inspiration for the Scorpion and maybe even the Renown.
