metal castingsince a boy ive had a passion for this. my uncle about 25 yrs ago made one from my old books with limited success as he really wanted to melt cast iron. as many may know a local group here run a small foundry here at petrie. i took some mamod wheels and flywheels up to them at the weekend.they told me to p.... off! they told me to buy them as they had heard about my models and obviously had money to spend! that wasnt my intention as i took a couple of hundred with me to pay them. i thought it would help support the guild. ive spent the day reading this website!http://www.backyardmetalcasting.com/index.html
im hooked! i have most things laying around . maybe others here are interested??? im very interested in the coffee tin furnace featured. as some here have lathes ect i thought this subject would be of interest.

Yes I've seen that website and hoping to build a small furnace to cast ali with later this year.
If you are having trouble finding bentanite it is used as a drilling sludge by the machines that drill holes under roads to put conduits for cables in them, so if you know anyone in the comms business they may know someone who does this work and be able to get yourself some for free.

The pictures of him smashing up a lathe with a sledgehammer were pretty repulsive though.
If he was serious about casting he should have repaired the lathe parts and got it to working condition again.
I couldn't bring myself to vandelise machine tools on such a large scale as that!
Ugh!

I do not know about that one, but sometimes shop equipment is beyond repair. That Lathe might have been the case. Sometimes ( on rare occasions ) they can get warped etc and rendered unusable.

It looked like a pretty hefty old lathe to me probably nothing a good fettle and a bed grind couldn't fix! And no need to post images of the resulting carnage on the internet!

sorry guys that lathe was sacrificed in the name of science. this guy restores antique lathes and has 8 to do up. not all cast iron is suitable for making machines. its all got to do with the grade of the iron. so he decided that to make new parts for his lathes he would need the same grade of iron so..... melt down the old to make the new one. the grade has to be correct! similar to this.... melt down old die cast (for the metal) and make new wheels for the mamods soon hopefully all ferrous metals in other forms wont be safe from my ever consuming mamods. first place to raid is the kitchen pots and pans

I'm saving all my red bull cans (even though I have a good supply of ali) just so I can make an engine from it and say my engine has got wings.

Just don't make a boiler out of one red bull can.
