HELLOJust thought Id say hello. I have been browsing this site daily for a couple of months and have finally got round to joining . My interest in steam started when I was little with thomas the tank engine since then I have loved all things steam. Over the years I have had many 00 layouts have have just started building a garden railway but my interest in mamod, wilesco and SEL steam engines started 3 years ago on my 13th birthday when I recieved this thing called a wilesco showman. I couldnt wait to steam it but when I did my young mind was completely overwhelmed by burning stuff to make steam this and the fact that I couldnt control the engine terrified me so the engine was put back in the box and forgotten about for 3 years but a couple of months ago I found the engine in my cupboard put it on my shelf I wanted to steam it but decided I should start with something simpler the next day I was in my local model shop and saw up on a dusty shelf a mamod sp5D WITHOUT THE DYNAMO reduced from £120 to £100 I asked why it had been reduced and was told it had been there for 4 years so I bought it took it home and steamed it and I loved it I soon started buying more and more until I had 2 long shelves full which I now call the wall of steam. I now think this is 1 of the greatest hobbies in the world .
sorry about the long post.

thanks James you wouldnt believe it but hes only a puppy but he limps and acts like a 13 year old right old grump we actually bought him out of pitty he was being kept in an awful cage had been seperated from his mother to early and had very little human contact the guy we bought him off said he had had his shots and gave us the number of the vet who had gave them to him when we phoned the number said he had never worked on a westie and would certainly remember if he had because he was a cow doctor we soon phoned the RSPCA and they said they had had similir reports about the same guy he is now doing time for animal cruelty on a large scale alphie (thats the dogs name) also has a bone problem (probably caused by inbreeding) which is slowly destroying his leg bones its been sorted out in 1 leg but is now starting to effect the others he now walks with a limp and when running his back legs bounce up and down and when he runs down the stairs they dont actually touch the stairs they just sort of skim along them while balancing on his front legs whenever he makes an emergency stop on the stairs he always comes really close to doing a front flip its quite a sight hes also got a number of other problems caused by hs early neglect poor alphie sorry about that rant but thinking about what that guy did do him and his brothers and sisters makes me so mad but hes now with a family who will love and take care of him hes even got a girlfriend at least hes doing better than me in that department

Its a great little engine but theres 1 thing when I received it I found a little metal rod piece knocking about in the burner what is it

Welcome to the forum from Australia.
Nice collection you have there.
I notice your roadster has a small amount of dezincing on the front of the boiler, obviously caused by the previous owner.
Make sure you use distilled water not tap water and empty the boilers and wipe the engines down after you finish running them to make them last. But I'm guessing with a collection that size you already knew that.

thanks for the tips but the strange thing is I bought that engine near mint and when I got it I could tell it had only been used once or twice so how could dezincification have accured if it was only run once or twice I myself have only used it once and have no intention of doing it again awkward little bugger trying to put the lit meths tray in and ripped me jeans in 2 standing up after setting it off. I was at school an all but on the bright side I did get to go home early and spend valuable learning time messing around with my engines

aye thats the problem with them
the new sp6 isnt that bad though

yeah but the control knob is right on top of the boiler I can imagine it gets quite hot and its made out of plastic all in all it looks a bit cheap to me but its all about personal opinion

nah i have one and it aint bad
the plastic knob dosent get hot its only the metal which does
|
pauly
|
what about the plastic valve gear I have heard it falls apart after a couple of runs and it still seems a bit of a daft place to put the control knob
|
Lewis

| pauly wrote: | | what about the plastic valve gear I have heard it falls apart after a couple of runs |
i have run mine loads of times and its fine not had a problem with it yet
some of the guys on here have seen it run as well at meets
The valve gear isnt plastic its metal painted black

Mine got hot enough to come off the threaded valve assembly. Had to glue it back on. This was a problem with the early Mamod Williams as well, later ones have a brass knob which uses an 'O' ring around the outside which comes off instead!
|
pauly
|
oh thanks for the correction I think this is just what mamod need if they are going to compete with wilesco cant wait to see this new valve gear on 1 of there roller

mine hasnt done that yet you must have got it pretty dam hot
|

now thats 1 thing I do hate the new william looks to toylike and that control knob where the whistle should be just looks wrong

I think it is a factor with too many air holes on the firebox side plates. I use 2 tablets in the SP5 burner, and it can end up as a towering inferno.
And looking at pauly's photos in this posting of his SP5 he suffers the same problems - look closely at his boiler for the evidence.

i use three tablets in the bigger burners
leave a hell of alot of soot and those new crome sides tarnish really badly and really fast
|
pauly
|
your right about that the flames do tend to come over the boiler
|
pauly
|
the most tablets I have used in mine was 5 because I had attached a whistle to it and it couldnt make enough steam
sometimes I made to much steam and the whistle didnt work
it does not have a whistle any more
|
pauly
|
I dont use it much anymore but have kept it for sentimental reasons

That's because... it's a toy!
|
pauly
|
you know what I mean James it just doesnt look as good as the original mamods and I heard that the couplers are not compatable with older mamod stock.
Im sure theres a thread on here about it somewhere.
|
James

True lad! I don't know much about the locos though

Mamodman123

Not to knock the William, but the older Mamod loco's are brilliant runners once you tweak them a bit

So the earthquake dislodges the safe so that bounces off your head and then for the aftershocks it's an assortment of various mamods bouncing off your bonce?
I dont think mamods were designed with health and safety in mind - lots of nasty wee sharp edges!

know you see I dont want anything to happen to the models so in the event of an earthquake and they fall off my corpse will absorb the impact
I can just imagine that happening and god saying to me
oh dear pauly the mamodairs appears to have fallen upon your bonce
