Would this be possible??

I were reading me Lincoln Longwool book, and on one page there were a picture of a boat they used to use for exporting them and all that. Would it be possible to build a model and make it steam powered do you think? Would it take much doing??

Les

Yes, it looks to be a wide barge with the engine just forwards off the centre.

Is this why you are after an engine??
pauly

if you did you might have some problems with balance with the engine right at the front but Im no expert.
James

Naa, if I make it I'll probably use the one Moosey sent

It looks like a simple canal barge to me, I suppose that one could fit an engine in it.
Rob

would make an interesting project jimmy. i wonder if there was and fire risk
James

I expect they would have had sails originally, but sails are

Even though there used to be a boat builder's yard like 50foot from where I'm sitting, I wouldn't know where to start

You can get plans for all sorts of boats, try the internet.

That's a simple flat bottomed barge mate. They're still in use in Amsterdam, mainly for rubbish collection but also for transporting flowers and produce....you'll see them in a train of 5 or more, being pulled by a tug - they have no power of their own. Quite a few have been converted to houseboats, and if anyone has been to the floating flowermarket on the Singel, most of the stalls are on barges like that.

Now a steam powered tug, pulling a few of these barges - THAT is something I would pay to see!

A lot of Canal boats were towed, by horses.
