And Now There are Seven - SE3's that is.For some time I've been after a or sight glass SE3 to finish of this section of my collection, but this one being a G & G was an added bonus.
First up here is a family pic with the latest addition in the front row middle.
The engine runs the same as an ordinary SE3 but, although supplied with a tablet burner I used a metho burner for test purposes instead
In all other respects this is a standard SE3 engine (except fpr there being noi mamod decal on the front of the firebox) but the sight glass version makes it fairly rare, being only made for around a year between 1978 and being superseeded by the SP5 in late 1978-79. The base is the only part that has been repainted on this engine and brass screws have been substituted for the eyelets.
One of the bug bears of the sight glass system is the difficulty of replacement, even though I used some high temperature silicone as well, there is still a small leak on one side when under preasure,
I decided to leave the firebox unpainted, and as you can see I have fired it already.
The one difference between the later SE3 G & G engines and the original ones is the lack of the mamod decal on the front of the firebox.
Close up of the repro G & G decal, the marks around it are from decal setter not paint removal.
.
I still have to pull it apart again, in the process of fixing the leaking end cap I managed to desolder the whistle collar and now have another leak there as well, . Some engines are just plain hard to get on with, .
Cheers

Nice one Chris
A great collection of SE3's.
Excellent detailed pics.
Shame about the sightglass. I think Mamod fails in design when it comes to their sightglass maintenance setup.

Hi Tom,
The one on the top left is an original Camden Works model, the very first ones released with the long SE3 burner and the standard whistle. I've never seen one with the eariler straight/right angled handled whistle, I'd expect it was either a 'ring in' or Mamod running out of the correct whistle and using old parts.
BTW the one, on the right, next to the later SE3 G & G, is the original SE3 G & G with no regulator and silver soldered to boot.
Cheers
Chris
