REALY BIG HINT ABOUT GERMAN ENGINESNow heres comes a realy big hint regarding German Engines!
I do not know if somebody alredy knows it, but I feel that i shoud share my knowledge about that
There ist ONE easy method, to check out, if the painting AND the finish of old GERMAN engine is original, or fake
You have to get you a "Schwarzlicht-Lampe", I think it's calles a black-light (actually it glows lila).....
Now you dark your room a little bit, switch the light on, and illuminate the bing, or doll, or marklin or whatever....
Normal Car-Paint stays dark, nothing happens...
But when the painting is original, it glows very cool with the blacklight! Glows green or yellow or red
E.g. my Marklin locomobile with the green base glows in a strong citron-yellow......
The original finished boilers also glow yellow!
So, i Think this should be quite usefull....
PS. i'm sorry, it's not possible for me to photograpf this...

Thanks for the tip! Although when you said it glows lilac, I think you are talking about an Ultra Violet light?

Nice tip.
They must of used minerals in the pigments of the paint that they dont use in modern paints I guess.

No, i think thats not always minerals.
The German Makers finished their engines by coveringin them with Shellac or cellulose lacquer....thats the stuff that glows
Mineral caused are e.g. the red pinstripes on Bing engines.
They contain Zinober, the red paint with mercury in ít...

Right. Put a bid in on one of those lights. I've got a few early German engines I'd like test. Should be fun.

I'm not sure how you could do a pic. It has to be dark to show the paint glow but the camera flash would spoil any effect. I guess I could try a pic in the dark without a flash. I'll give it a go when I get a light.

Yep thats the trick! ITs like taking a picture of a Tv you need it to be totally dark

Set the camera on a tripod, turn off the flash and use the timer to take the photo. That way you will eliminate camera shake and hopefully will get a reasonable photo.

Its only the ones that were left outside when the Chernobyl cloud came over Europe that glow in the dark!

I just found these: http://www.ledshoppe.com/Product/ledp/LP1069.htm
4 UV torches for $3 including shipping!
I love ledshoppe.com
I've ordered some, so now all I need is some old German engines to try them on, that might be a bit more expensive...

Some cameras, including many digitals are blind to UV light. Some arent too though.
