SteelyHello, my name is Ben Steel, I'm 16 and I love running and collecting model steam engines especially Mamod, Bowman and SEL. I also go to many steam fairs and go to one every other week or sometimes every week.
I also like aeroplanes and I am currently training for my PPL (private pilots licence) as I wish to be a pilot when I get older.
It all started when I was about 12 when I got my first Mamod TWK1 which I still have now, which I bought at a steam fair, and since then I have gradually built up a quite large collection.

Good luck with the PPl steely.
My mate did his. About 50pound per hour here I think. he got it after 15hrs? Restricted of course. Then got Instrument rating, then commercial licences, then became flying instructor. Now flying coastwatch planes in Norther Australia, looking for illegal fisherman/immigrants.
Poor bloke tried to get into Qantas (International flying). But he realised that they were taking on our Air Force pilots.
Basically, young people at around 18yr old, were joinig the airforce, getting trained as pilots(and paid for it), staying their until about the age of 26 or so, and walking straight into Qantas and becoming airline pilots. Qantas would snap them up in an instant due to skills and flying hours.
Got more money with Qantas too.
Not sure how it works over there, but a consideration maybe?
Me thinks being a air force pilot might be safer than a commercial airline pilot in this current time with all what's going on in the world

what sort of fighters do you have over there wallace? quantas mostly fly 747's dont they?? has anyone on here heard of Robin hood doncaster sheffield airport?? they used to fly vulcans from there. it is about 30mins away from me, my brother works at the hospital in doncaster. when the planes take off, they are so low, you can see all of the windows and nearly the people inside!! they are flying 747's to america from there soon, and they have already been test flying the new super airbus super jumbo out of there. i saw it the other day flying really low. its huge theyre seeing if the runway is long enough for it, its one of the longest runways in the country

The Fighters here are mostly F/111's andFA/18 Hornets. We are getting some new ones soon to replace the current fleet.
Qantas have the 747's, but mostly now there the 767's I think. I not too sure, but they fly everywhere, including the UK
I live in a training area for them. Well not directly a training area, but they fly over here in afternoon/evening/night dogfighting. Good to watch, but they are a little high to get a good view of

My, my, Ben, but aren't you the popular one? 5 pages and growing!
Do you have any pictures of your models on the forum? Sounds like you have a nice collection! Godspeed getting that ppl so you can fly me across the pond to toast all my buddies. After that we'll gather up as many engines as the plane can carry and fly 'em into Oz for an emergency goodwill drop. Glad to have you on the forum, mate!

Years ago I was doing my PPL but then I started working country so couldn't finish it.
Had 13 hours flight experience.
The day before I was going to do my first solo they had the first ever fatal accident at Jandakot airport where I was doing my lessons.
A girl doing her first solo came in too low and flew into the trees before the runway.
It had same wind conditions the day I was due to do mine so they cancelled my solo and I just did a regular lesson.
The plane wreckage had been taken away but as you were on final approarch you could see all the tops of the trees snapped off and a big gouge in the ground just before the runway where the plane hit.
It was a bit off putting.
The next week I went country so never got to do my solo.

No it was earlier than that I was in the UK from 1997 to 2000 it would of been around 1994.

Thanks for that, just wondering if he might have been the instructor.
I swear he got them from WA, but maybe not. He was in NT for a while, then moved to WA, Jandakot, or near the AP anyway.
Over there you only have to get your car rego checked every 3 yrs, is that right?
All I remember, is he bought some peugot diesel heap, with major rust, but drove it all the way back to here, across Australia.
He didn't even bother regoing it here, it would have never passed

Much better Steely. I was going to ask the Beadle relevance.
152 was the first plane I went in with my mate, whos an instructor.
Then a 172, then an Archer.
Finally a Beech twin engine, that was real nice.
Then he got me to go in a aerobat (looked like a 152 but smaller)
I swaer I have seen R/C planes bigger.
I didn't get sick, just nearly had a haeart attack doing all stunts in it.
I haven't been in a plane since, and never will get into a small one again

You done the steep turns and stalls yet.
Even they used to scare me
Steep turn was 60degree.
Stall was cut engine revs back, then pull back to get nose of plane up, 'till it stalls, then recover. I had my stomach in my mouth when he first did it.
In the aerobat, the worst was the tailslide.
Just point plane straight up, and go till it runs out of puff. It will stop, then start falling back down. The idea is to then push forward, getting nose of plane facing down, then recover.
I didn't think we'd recover

$200,000 a year!!!
Cheaper over here. My mate got his, and it, all up cost him around $30,000 Aus.
That was basic commercial, and from there on he had to get more ratings for different engines to be able to fly certain aircraft.
The costly bit was getting his hours up once he got his PPL to make the eventual transition to Commercial licence.
Of course the ultimate way to do it (here anyway) is join the air force and become a pilot. Then, once you are fully trained, leave the air force and join qantas, then become a international airline pilot, and get more money.
Mind you, I'd prefer the airforce. At least you can shoot back, unlike a airliner
The way the world is going, I think airliners may eventually need weapons

Congrats Steely,
My son is pursuing the same goal...he is up to a rating called "Certified Flight Instructor-Instrumentation"...he is teaching flight now to build hours. At 564 hours last count, it will take a couple more years to reach the 1000-1200 hours it takes to be hired by the commercial airline companies...til then he is flying Cessnas 172 aircraft.
I've been up with him once...fantastic feeling I must say.
