That looks like a nice layout - locos aren't bad too !! Any idea what they are using for 'grass' on that layout? I'm interested in adding some on mine and was wondering what might be best.

Do they sell Woodland Scenics where you are? I always liked them for Grass and other such scenery for my layouts. Good Products for a Model Railroad.

i'm not sure, as when they were adding that stuff to it, i didnt go very often. but i think you can use the stuff that is used on 00 gauge layouts.

we try not to!
but when some people light locos via the chimney, the flam bursts out the bottom, burning the scenery

I got a lovely fireball out my Hornby Rockets chimney last time I lit up. Funny thing was I was lighting it from under the firebox like you should!

This is the problem - I am trying to think of something reasonably fire resistant, yet has some realism. Its unlikely to have regular exposure to a lot of heat - most spillage or accidents will just affect the track, and the ballast being granite chippings will not burn no matter what. So something that might smoulder a bit should the worst happen, eg sawdust, would be OK, but anything involving expanded polystyrene is a no no !!
OK I know expanded polystyrene would not be any good for grass, its just the first example of a highly flammable thing that might be used in scenery that came to mind!!
I think scatter material might be a good starting point, especially as you could sort of blend the edges of the grass in. I will just have a good look to see what is available.

I'm planning on using astro-turf on my friends layout. Perhaps the England football team will want to use it for their training
