A crazy idea... would it work??

I were up the antiques centre today, walking through this boring cack, and then, eeeee I recognise that! It's not really owt to do with a boat, but I had an idea! It were an old wooden shuttle out a loom. I were stood there grunting to meself, scratching me chin, thinking if it could be made into a little boat!

Do you think that it's possible?

Would certainly be different

... oi, Jim! Pray tell: What is an old wooden shuttle out a loom?
Please forgive an old continental's ignorance ...
IndianaRog

What Tom said     No clue what you are describing...
steamyjim

The shuttle on a loom would carry the weft from left to right through the warp
IndianaRog

Sooooo, it's sort of a Warp Drive?
steamyjim

The invention of the power loom couldn't really of happened if the flying shuttle hadn't been invented. Previously the shuttle had to be passed through by hand.

The flying shuttle shot accross in a channel enabling machinery (2 levers) to whack it from left to right (weft to wight  so you remember )

... I'm rendered flabbergasted!  Jim, please enlighten us as to what shuttle the loom is.

Read my post above Tom!

I have nothing to do with the textiles industry-haven't even been to a cotton mill ! But i find it very interesting and understand how a vast majority of the machines work.

Inudstry and industrial heritage is one of my main interests

... what? A flying saucer?Shot across channel? What?
steamyjim

Sorry didnt explain it very well.

The shuttle contains the Weft.

The warp is held in 2 grids and his held in a position where the weft can be passed through it. This position is called the 'shed' i beleive.

Basicly once the warp is in this position the warp is wacked across in the shuttle.

Then the shed is closed and the sides are swapped over (top becomes bottom-bottom becomes top)

Then the weft is wacked back across making another line in the material.

Ill think of an easier way to explain it in a minute

... I've still no idea what you mean. Could it be a mechanical weaving stool?
steamyjim

Here you go!

Kids weaving

Did you ever do that in infants school where you had a frame with lots of string up and down it Well thats the warp

Well you know when you pass the other bits of material through it to get a complete sheet. Thats the weft

Well you know how it has to be done over and under over and under.

By using the shuttle you could wack it straight through the warp which saves so much time
toxx

... so it's about weaving! Okay, I think I understand: The thing that's shot about to and fro is called 'Schiffchen' (little ship) in German.
Unfamiliar I was with the proper expressions. Have added them to my wee mind! Thanks!

Thats it Tom

One of these I take it.....

Jimbo, I love that idea.....you'll have to find a suitably small plant, maybe take apart an MM1 or something, but it would be a thing of beauty.....
steamyjim

Aye thats what i think he's on about
johnreid

I have never seen one that I would consider large enough. Put a bottom on it and you have a basic canoe shape, I dont see why not, but what to power it with? A lilliput?
mogogear

Ahoy- A "wren"....to the boat yard please!!
