Old Smoky has arrived !!Arrived today. Appears totally original, all parts move. Lots of oil and grease. Doesn't look although it has many firings. A bit of corrosion, and a little pressure in the boiler. Presumably from that woolly stuff. Do I go for the vinegar and rinse programme ??
Originally was going to "pimp" it, but maybe we'll see .........
Any thoughts ??

I think it looks great, my favorite wilesco that one is I'd say go ahead and rinse it out. Helped my TE1a get cleaned up.

Just a clean and rinse out should do the trick. It is in good condition as it is! Are you going to run it?

interesting.
why a roller chassis and t.e front wheels

Apparently 1970-1980 thats how it was. Save production costs I presume. And yes I want to run it !!

Because the TE had just been introduced, and they didn't make a proper TE smokebox until a few years after

Do the rinse and clean, enjoy it some and then decide if you want to pimp your Smoky.
Mine had to be taken apart anyhow, so it is going for a conversion somewhat. Not as elaborate as Rogers, that would be too costly for me.

is the large cog on this model as tinny and noisey as the large cog on the newer models

I think it's up to you. But, my vote, its far to good to mess with. Clean it and play. It looks to be a great model. Just the way it was supposed to be. Made between 1970 and 1980.
I'm looking forward to seeing what it looks like with a couple of hours of love and care.

Maybe this will help. Forget the colours but this is a pic of the three main types of Wilesco Traction Engine (oldest on the left).

A few hours elbow grease and semi-strip down. I've left the rivets alone. The vinegar rinse got a lot of crud out of the boiler. The boiler itself looks OK.There were a lot of ? charcoal sticks crammed in the burner housing. Don't recoginse them as fuel blocks ... strange. For the time being I'll content myself with a set of tyres, and as soon as some fuel blocks arrive. I'll fire her up. Quite chuffed with this buy !! For those with good eyesight the whistle assembly is still out on the photos.....and I have found out how to make the photos smaller.

Looks very good. It never surprises me what a couple of hours of cleaning can achieve.

Nice engine, I too would be tempted to leave as is.
