Organising a Forum meetGuys, today, at the museum, I was asked if we would be interested in doing our own STIA, especially for steam toys.
The guys who attended today, Stilldrillin, myself, DLR and Titan all think it's a good idea, and wondered how many of you guys would be prepared to come.
It's still in the planning stages, but the Museum big wigs are all for it, it was their idea
I've given them the Forum address so we should hear from them soon, hopefully!!
It could be arranged one saturday at the most convenient time for people, say July or something, and would last from like 9am-5pm, so long enough for a good day out.
Lincolnshire's middle of the country, so you can't get much fairer
It could be our own little meet, which could grow into a big event!!
Post your thoughts here

It’s a good idea James,
But may I be the voice of reason here - as most of us have to drive 6 to 10 hours each way to get there may I suggest you do it on a SATURDAY over a long weekend such as next years "Spring Bank holiday" 24 - 26th May.
That way we have time to get there, stay on the Saturday night and still have plenty of time to get back home afterwards.
The bank holiday at the beginning of May is to early as most people are ding DIY and sorting out there gardens etc. And as MTA said any later and most people are all a bit busy with summer in full swing.
If you advertise it early enough I am sure a lot of the overseas Forum members may even consider swinging by.
|
Steve_S

Kritika has a good point. It isn't far for me, closer than STIA, but for people coming from afar Saturday would probably be better.

If it's next year - I should have my little loco built!
Will there be any track for those with Mamod locos to show off? Someone could get in touch with some of the 16mm Association people and see what can be done?
I'm sure Jame's enthusiasm and love for live steam will get some support from the other Steam Forums and clubs etc too?
|
James
|
Aye!! Sounds like a good time for it!!
Titan will take his O gauge layout (see Lincoln rally thread for pics)

Like us.
School isn't out in May so sometime in school holidays would suit us better. But even if it's May you may still see me.
It would, however, be a shame not to bring Andrew. He knows how to fire all the engines.

Gil,
You can pick up transatlantic bargain air fares for less than the excess baggage charge for bringing any engines.

And being in the Summer time... it could be named something cultured
like the "Mid Summer Steam ".... Being about half way around the calendar from the STIA event would give you maximum attendance
<sulk> Sounds fun in my dreams...sigh!!! Would be nice to see you guys and your engines ....

I left the nights out on purpose-- I figured it would be in the day
plus the young lads seem to eschew the cultured references... like Monty Python...
|

Aye, I also associate both Will Shakespeare and Monty Python with high culture. I assume that the common riff raff might not appreciate such high brow references.

Ahhh "Old Geek" I am then---they were the freshest comedy I had ever seen when I was 13... They may not stand up to todays standards..... but they beat the He** out of US sit-com of the time....
Laugh -In was pretty good for that time- and it would be a long long time till the Mel Brooks gang, Steven Wright, Steve Martin, Robin Williams, Dave Chappell and a million others in between came along..

How else do we expect them to learn? I love Monty Python "run away! Run Away!", Shakespeare is good too!!! The world would be a better place with a bit more culture in it!!
I would love to attend, but my car is, alas, not amphibious. I can not afford to travel to the next state, much less to Europe!!
I have heard about a steam show coming up in June in my neck of the woods. I think it will be in Orange area (central Mass) I will post some info as soon as I find out more.

Sounds good to me. The middle of a long week-end about half way between STIA's would be ideal. The name "Midsummer Madness" has already been used but I already have the tee shirt

Thinking, we already have STIA at the beginning of the year.
I think later on, (September half term?), to give a more balanced, years entertainment.......

I'm with David, purely for the selfish reason that the Spring bank holiday is a bad time for me.

If that was the case, I would try my best to get there , but I don't think it will happen.
We all live too far from eachother.

I think the whole thing is a great idea. I love to come but it's quite costly for me to attend. STIA this year cost me, 2 flights, 2 nights in a hotel and a hire car for the weekend. I had a great time and money well spent.
I'd hate to have to choose between STIA and the forum event. My vote would have to be for the forum event being later in the year. This may just allow me to save for both.

Just thinkin`.......
We could probably only raise 6 - 10 displays..
Not enough for our own show.
That guy with the oil cans was comfortable enough in the large hall.
We could all get in there during a later "steam oil etc" day.
(It`s a lot lighter in there an all!)

This sounds like a great idea. I would think that there would be enough engines there to make a good display.
