Painting an aveling and porter wheel

yesterday i took the wheel of the engine old faithful, and and cleaned it up with a grinder fitted with a wire brush in prepartion of painting here some pictures.

More picture coming as we do more on the wheel

Geez, I hope that jack is sound, I wouldn't want that thing landing on my foot.  

That's a job and a half getting all the rust of that, could be worth you while investing in a cheap sand blasting kit.

only took 2 of us around 5 hour to remove all the rust.

The jack is a 10ton jack and manige to jack one die up as it not lifting all 14tons. Before we left we put her siting on wood so if the jack faild then it would only drop 2 mill at most. That been it squashing the wood

5 hours is not too bad.
It always amazes me the scale of the job to restore one these things back to running condition.

she been regully steaming for around 5years but we have only just got around to painting the wheels

nice one andy. i have my eye on an old rusty wreck aveling roller, just need to save some more money before making an offer.

That is really looking good, I helped to restore a Wallace & Stevens roller a few years ago so I know how hard and frustrating the work is but the end result makes it worth it. Thumbs up!
