petrie steam shed model steam pump collection.

in another post i stated that on last sunday (steamup day) i was told to take home an fix up these models. if anyone can identify them please post! they were assembled from kits by a old shed member who sadly isnt with us now. the family gave these models to shed. they have been running on air every weekend for 3 to 4 hours for the past 1 1/2 years. they finally stopped running! the committee decided to give them to me for appraisal or fix????? i feared that they might have just been plain worn out!??????? .

????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

the yellow pump on the end with the double cylinder... it had a seized piston and the timing had slipped?????
the bigger green one its flywheel was loose and it leaked on the valve .???????????????????
the real small one (about the size of a matchbox!.... well its valves were seized and it leaked on the head gasket.????
the pump that is tall just behind it.... it had lost a grub screw and hense its timing....the main frame was loose.??????

the next pump ....second from the end... it was missing a screw from the main bearing block so the cam was flapping around. ???

the pump on the end.. its grubs had slipped on the fly wheel.

all the globe valves were loose ...???????????????????????????

2 full days of work later............

running on air.......

only four of the pumps would go on steam at 20 psi.
enjoy!(sorry about the close ups but they are so small!)

liz and i hope you enjoyed the vids BUT!!!!. these may be last vids ever of these under steam and air!! im going to insist that these pumps be put on static display only!!!! i fear that if we dont they wont be going for much longer. what do you think???

They're beauties! It seems a shame never to run them again. Maybe on special occasions?

Wow  3 to 4 hours every week!

They must be great quality engines, I'm amazed they're not flogged out already!

It would be a shame for them not to run at all though.

You have a few engines there. Perhaps you could run a show of them running at a set time or times. If each engine only ran for a few minutes, and it was combined with an educational presentation - you could have quite a show on your hands whilst minimising the flogging and maximising the impact of each engine.

Once you have your presentation down pat, you might be able make a DVD available for a small donation towards the collection

What do you think?

Hi Glenn, as a steamoligist, I decree them unservicable and will collect them and put them down for no fee whatsoever.
That saves the Shed all the problems associated with fixing them.

I've seen them, what a shame.

given that they were not in new condition before the shed received them, i don't think that 250 hours running is so much for a well made engine if lubricated properly.

thanks guys. i returned them today. its been decided...... they will be run for about five minutes every week to keep them well lubed. they will be set going if a large number of people are present or by special request. hopefully this will prolong the life of them.   i will be keeping a closer eye on them in the future. out of interest! ... the larger green engine...... nobody there today knew that it had forward and reverse. they were most surprised. two of the older members knew the guy who made them and had seen him demonstrate them and yet didnt realise they had forward and reverse!.
