PHOTOS from the NAMES show, Toledo, OhioArrived at the NAMES show, Toledo, Ohio.
(North American Model Engineering Society)
My son Mike and I are in our room after a 630 mile drive today.
Friday Morning I will bring in a couple models to display and run and get them set up. Then I'll enjoy the rest of the day meeting with other exhibitors. Friday is set up day and it's closed to the public so it's a great time to catch up with those I only see at these shows. Saturday can be a bit of a zoo but without question, all fun. The show is open Sunday but we will head out early for the ride home.

I bet there are lots of fun things to look at. Plus the meeting of people with common interests, even more fun IMHO.

Are you competing in the Sherline Machinist's challenge?
I don't see it on this years itinerary.
I loved the little beam engine that came third about three years ago.
A lot of the models I've seen online are truly spectacular.
Take lots of Pics and have fun

What kind of engines are you displaying?
I hope there's a Jensen in there.

That is a beautiful steam launch, the Lady Gayle. It belongs to Clarence and Gayle Meyers. It has a Navy K compound engine. I have been aboard her on Lake Winnepessaukee in New Hampshire.

I brought only 2 this year. The Duplex Corliss and the Clarkson Marine vertical twin. I managed to snag 2 nice projects from the consignment table. They are both Jensen 20G's !!!!

Hi Gil,
Do you do scratch builds or focus on restorations?
The scratch builds at this show are totally astonishing.
For forum members this is the link to the 2005 Sherline Machinist's Challenge.
http://www.sherline.com/names05.htm
All the engines have been scratch built by the competitors. Truly amazing.
I need to monitor the dates as I am seriously tempted to make the trip one year. The Lady Gayle is awesome.

Here are a few scratch built miniatures from th show.

And they got even smaller......
shrunken Stuart 10V

The subminiature Stuart 10V is amazing. The photos above are much larger than the piece.
The head is held on by studs and nuts. The nuts are less than 1/16" outside diameter.

Wonder who prints those gargantuan Dollar Bills
I am afraid that I would be selling both my Kidneys if I even got near that place. Please show us more.

The good news is you can come here with only enough money for your room, food, and $8 to get in and most of the pieces are not for sale.

Lovely engines and I think they are worth more than $1.

I will post more photos as time allows but the web connection at this hotel is painfully slow in the evening due to high usage.
I will likely do most of the rest after I have gotten home.

Maybe in a year or two, too much going on here, plus the gas prices have me becoming a hermit.
|
redryder
|
Yes, gas prices are nasty and worse in Connecticut. I see diesel in the 4.50 range. As an independant trucker in the mid 1970's I spent 2,000 a month on diesel at 50 cents a gallon. If I ran the same routes today I would be spending 16,000-17,000 a month on fuel to run coast to coast. I can see why those owner-operators are upset.

Nick

Wow Gil!
Now I know why you tried to talk me into going.
Maybe I can plan for a trip to it next year.

Not steam but it sure caught my eye.
It came from Jeannette, Pennsylvania, home to Jensen Steam Engines!!!

How does it work?
I see it's $150.

I would imagine that you pick a coloured car, spin it and collect the number of points/miles it stops at. The one who reaches a certain pre-determined total is the winner.
|
redryder
|
To operate you turn it about 1/4 turn or less counterclockwise and it bumps up against a stiff spring...... When you release it it spins like a top in clockwise direction.

That is an interesting toy. Something that would go over well at any Antique show.

So, is the Fairbanks Morse Steam? The only ones I ever messed with were much bigger and Diesel. Those are SO cool.
|
Les Marsh
|
The Fairbanks is nice, but the paddle steamer engine and paddles are something else.
I noticed what looked liked a compressed airline, was he running it or was that for the smaller engines?

I've never seen anything like the paddle engine! That's tremendous! I've always enjoyed looking at the NAMES website at the photos but always wanted to go. I guess i'll just have to try and get there sometime sooooon! Thanks for the photos Gil.

WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
where can i get one or learn how to make one!!!

The paddle steamer runs on air (or steam) and the Fairbanks Morse runs on gasoline.
