Poor day at Petrie Steam- Nov 2009.

Glenn ,Liz & I were all that showed.

It was very depressing - a first time for this.

but Glenn & Liz brightened things a little with their putt putt boats.

I got some vid of 'em, they'll be in video section, once uploaded.

Glenn found a beauty of a model marine steam engine(in steamshed) , he hopes to clean and get it running on compressed air, then hopefully steam. Unfortunately I didn't get any pics of this engine.

Some good news- the main boiler recently had its annual inspection- It passed!!!!!!!! not in steam today- but probably (cross fingers) next month.

well liz and i were exhausted by the end of the day ,but happy. there wasnt a lot of people but all that veiwed the displays showed quality interest in steam. lizs pop pop boats were a hit! a last minute thought saw liz and i up till 2 am sunday morning ! (steamup is at 9 am!) weve had these boats for over two years and never used them!!!   i was settling down at 10pm when a thought occurred??????????? a shallow pan that use for casting might be right for a table pond????? i had to try!! so at 11 pm we had worked out how to fire them!!!problem ....problem...problem.... ran out of candles !!!!!! i know we could have used a bit of solid fuel and i have some for emergency.. but......     i had scored some small welsh plugs in a clearance and they were just right for "casting" lol lol some wax into..... so .. three hours later... sixty candles were made!!!     of course the whole time we were making them we had the boats going!! by the end of the steamup liz came home with only 12 candles!!! those that saw them were amazed. clinton took great pride in showing his jensen. the highlight of the day.             ..........................................................

i was checking out the other "other " model section of the shed. i havent bothered to "snoop" into every corner...not many had.....
anyway as things were quite i decided to have a real good look!!!on the floor   covered in dust ..hidden by other things... was the above engine!!!!     only one old shed member could remember seeing it and that was over ten years ago!!!

its 12 inches high. ... has a five inch cast iron flywheel...it has a 3 inch prop.. and im not sure yet but it looks as if it has either a inch and a quarter ....half?? piston!!!! after i get it running it is planned to hook it up to clintons old 60s boiler. ( its a generating type of boiler and i believe capable of producing enough steam to fire it!) after that!!!! it may or may not???? be hooked up to air and shown running at the shed.. but im thinking??????     if clintons boiler will power it or my proposed new one will ??? we may keep it so we can show it under steam on steamup and just "store"it at the shed apparently.......??????there are 3 others?????????? its being looked into!!

Quite a contrast to the Pop Pops

quite! its a surprise to all.......im thinking it may be too dangerous to display on air however i can disconnect the prop .....there are lots of small fingers to be considered.
BK

Nice find Glenn, you could take the prop off and replace it with a flat belt pully???

its a nice idea. however the politics of the shed say.... it must stay as is ...the way the guy (known to older members) had it. you see there was this guy who was big with the shed and they gave him his own display area ( where the little pumps and stuarts are) he took ill (alkz....er! apparently the family took him home to the uk??? his models were "just left there" the family said we could keep them and display them "in his memory" so the older ones that knew him try and keep them going but somehow??? this engine got missed??? the area is still kept as "his"we have another "area" the same and a whole trailer of models but his wife still comes up and cleans them ect. she is 78 yrs old. we have two "old steamgirls" both 78 . still very active around steam.   so who said steam is for young BOYS  lol lol
Bugsy

How about a perspex case around the prop, Glenn?
That's what they do at the boat shows.
ozsteamdemon
