I can remember making a tinplate pop pop boat in metalwork at school. That would have been in about 1961.

I gotta say, I now have a pop pop boat, and it's worth everyone into steam owning one.
There nothing to get over excited, but certainly interesting to watch running, and for anyone with young kids, well they love them.
Not sure if mine delibrately had oil on the "boiler bit" but it pumped out some smoke. Maybe it was poorly made candles from India
Eventually one of the smoke alarms in the house going off and my daughter yelling attracted attention of the neighbours
But yeah, well worth it

Second that...I have several of these boats, picked up a few at STIA '06....I think every self-respecting collector should have at least one. Great fun! What amazed me is how long they run on a couple of drips of oil.
There are a few poppops that fetch serious money as well...if you ever come across one of these

in a car boot, buy it!
Made by the same parent company that also made SEL, Merit and Multum

Got one, bought it about 6 years ago, haven't fired it up in ages.
I do like the putt putt sound they make when they go and they are cheap good fun, best of all you can still burn yourself on them just like Mamods.
If anyone is interested I have plans to make them from a 1970s Readers Digest book, Just suggest that when it tells you to cut up a sheet of asbestos to use as a heat shield you use something else.

I've just bought a couple of these at the big Continental market we had in town at the weekend. I was about to start a thread about them and then I saw this! Haven't fired mine up yet, I'm waiting till I see my dad, and the other one is a Christmas present for my friend. Mine have little tiny candles in the packet, but it's good to know I could use oil when they run out.

yeh, if you run out of candles, use a drop of olive oil a wick holder (like in the bottom of candles) and i have some wick i could sell you
