Pre-war Se3Managed to get this on ebay a couple of weeks ago, took its time to arrive, anyway for those that didn't see it on ebay it was the one that was listed a few months ago and sold for about 200 i think.
Anyway here are some pictures in the condition it arrived in.
He also sent me the original base (cut into 2) I managed to remove enough of the dulux to see some darker red under. The paint job it arrived with isn't really great, it looks ok but its mega mega thin, some bits have already chipped off where the firebox has moved around a bit. Frames are the original paint so I will leave them as they are in good condition and mainly because I don't have a decent match.
Everthing else is ok and will upload the video of the steaming later and also restoration pictures
obviously its not as good as the one that went last week on ebay but for half the price I'm not going to complain

He sold it trying to make a profit! he "made" 7 quid after making a base and painting it
All restored now, I badged it mamod, doesn't matter either way really, Ive seen more with these colours badged mamod. I don't think Ive ever seen a mamod coloured SE3
for anyone wanting to know the colour is Peugeot ( ) Regency Red

Another great resto MM, ahhhhhh, those gears, you can't beat a prewar Mamod or Bowmans for those, all that lovely brassessssssss. I love that little rustic touches on the Mamod prewar engines with the slightly rough soldering and finishing of the brass parts like the whistle on this one,
Cheers

Nice job, MM. She's a beaut! That cylinder is neat...and so different. The gearing's
cool, of course, and it made me think what an efficient and clever arrangement.
They only had to use one shaft stop/bearing located on the upper shaft. All the
others bits do the same job as a secondary function. Just another part of the
overall quality of the whole piece. They don't make 'em like that anymore...but they should.

Thankyou Chris and Chuck!
Ive been informed that this restoration has been ill received elsewhere for whatever reason so your possitive comments are appreciated
Personally Chuck I don't think you are too far off with the engine in your signature . You're right though these old mamods/hobbies/bowman engines are great engines and have a practical use even today! Still going strong! It's a shame to see the decline in quality of mamods but the price of labour/raw materials have risen beyond belief and something has to "give"
Cheers

To be fair, for an engine that has been cut in half there is no option other than a full restoration, it is one that has been saved so that can only be a good thing. I am not usually one to run for the polishing compound but there are rare occasions when it has to be used and this is one.

I Did
The story goes that the base was cut in half so that it could be used in a boat!
|
pauly
|
I didnt know that
|
Mamodman123
|
Thanks guys!
As MF said it was the only option, I will fire and use it and in a few years with some steamings under its belt it will look old and used once again!
The base was cut in half yes for it to be put into a boat!
If the paint was original then I would have left as is, but it had been repainted recently so I had no choice.
Here's what it looked like when it was first on ebay...I think.
Correct me if I'm wrong but.....
It was originally listed on ebay as above, it sold to a bidder...he didn't want it or something sent it back to the original seller. The seller then listed it as a buy now option, and someone bought it. He then received it and listed it on ebay and someone bought it for 200 pounds. The new owner then sold it so me...STILL WITH ME? I'm not with myself
It's done the rounds and found a good home
With its brothers (one i made earlier)

So, when did it get a new base? Before you bought it?

Oh and steamed it

That is a great piece and now that you've added your touch it's a real stunner. The paint work is great and the brass is right where it wants to be !

Its hard to believe its the same engine, great job, and love the vid as well
What a great story. So the person who sold it to you made the base or the person who sold it to the person who sold it to you?
Glad its finally come to someone who knows what they are doing, and can get her going MM

Lofty praise there MM, thanks!
I've collected stuff other than engines and in most things you see the same
progression, or regression, as it were.
A company will produce their finest quality items at the start and secure a
faithfully devoted customer base. They enjoy good success, have healthy profits.
But as the years pass, the drive for better and better profit margins comes, too.
In that pursuit, they often dilute the materials, details, and extra touches that put
them on the map in first place! Competition from other companies and of course,
the factors you mentioned, all contribute to the trend.
The saying, "They don't make 'em like they used to!"...is an old one.
