pseudo-poppet-valve engineAs this might be of general interest, I post this one here, not inthe ebay section:
http://www.ebay.de/itm/Dampfmasch...spielzeug&hash=item4604d60cc9
a rare BING 130/274 "Pseudoventilmaschine" (imitated poppet-valve- engine). The huge cylinder-cover and the long "cross-head-guard" disguise the usual rod-valve-gear...
Seems to be re-painted...
Those were the days...

I saw this engine when it was listed...it had a BIN of 500 euro.
Would have been okay, but this engine has been overpainted...,

I'm ignoring for the reason it's been butchered paint wise.
It will be difficult to remove that thick puke it's covered in

Why do sellers of expensive items shoot themselves in the foot.
One lousy picture. What is he hiding?

Well, they simply think we are a stupid bunch of utter fools. Or they do not think at all...

What's the problem with the engine being painted? It seems to be a decent job, as far as I can tell from that picture.

It's as obviously the wrong colour as if your children were born violet

I don`t really see the problem regarding the paintjob either...looks decent enough, and should the buyer want to restore to original or just another color like salmon on the firebox or Robins Egg Blue on the enginebase theres nothing to stop him...

...reading the posts which have arrived so far, I'd rather join the large group of members who do not post at all
Well, the engine is a nice one, quite rare, interesting features and as such I wanted to make it "available" to all interested in technical and /or historical sweeties...
I have underestimated the deep rift between the "painters" (delete rust and grime, do a proper paintjob - mind, I am not referring to the edding and toe-nail-lacquer types - according to your fancy and relish...) and the "preservers" (nobody can re-create the colours and the spririt of yonder, it is a crime to erase the marks and scars of decades, RESPECT, clean but do not polish...) factions.
I am a "preserver". I will not yield.
But I still do talk to any "painter" on this forum
(Sigh, head slowly shaking, big sigh. Followed by a big glass of Malt: STOP, no, no discussion whisky/whiskey/blended/malt/bourbon/Irish now, Please

I know what you mean, trying to avoid talking to "the painters" would be best.

That's quite an artificial distinction, between "painters" and "preservers". To me, it all comes to the condition of the item. If it has the original paint in good shape, by all means keep it original and perhaps only use very judicious touch-up methods to restore it. But if the old paint is (mostly) gone, discoloured etc., then a good new paintjob looks much better to me.
I guess I am more of a painter though, as my most recent "crime" was to repaint an old version Stuart v-twin oscillator. Curiously, nobody seemed to mind when I posted the pics. Perhaps it's not old enough an engine to really get the "preservationists" going...
I'll try next with two other engines I have, a pre-war Maerklin and a (presumed) Stevens Model Dockyard. Both are in dire need of a nice paintjob, imho.

Without paint metal will just rust away. and after rehabbing reconditioning or restoring I believe a quality paint job is in order, personally I respect that the colors are non original It can never be passed off as an unmolested mint condition original. It say's to me the engine was used cared for and well maintained. and enjoyed

If it had been improved with same colours as original it would have different but this is a travesty, a defecation.

I think there's quite a lot of painters on the forum. I actually think its a good thing as it keeps people interested in more than shelf queens. It was surprising how many aren't running their engingines anymore.
Interesting to see people say 'paint it' quite often when you can see the old patina left. Rust and dezinc are an issue though.
I think I prefer it this way round to the other, but certainly it's a good idea to keep the preservation of engines idea alive.
I've had to rethink painting a number of petrol stationaries due to this idea.
