you shouldnt use firelights because the flame is much to big for a mamod, you will evetually damage the mamods paint and savety valve,
you should do away with the block burner anyway and get a meths burner which is much cheaper and effective to fuel.

I think the best upgrade money can buy for a Mamod loco is a meths burner.....I've fitted all three of mine with one, never looked back. Easier to run, better at raising steam and a lot cheaper in the long run!
The dream steam burners are excellent, see
http://www.dream-steam.com/upgrade_parts.html
Or you can PM our member Gremlin, who makes is own superb burners.

I've got a couple of boxes of mms fuel tablets which you are welcome to, as my loco's are either meths or gas (butane) fired.
I'd second Moose's comment regarding fitting a meths burner, they are a great modification.

Moose knows what he is saying, definatly a must do upgrade, the Meths burner will work so much better and cost less in the long run too.

I'd agree with the others re meths burners. They are much better.
In the mean time, in answer to your original questions; the tray takes one of the square Mamod tablets broken in half (i.e. 2 half tablets) or two of the newer round tablets. DON'T use firelighters, they are not the same thing atall. You should only use Mamod or Esbit tablets. There may be other makes of the same thing but not that I know of.

thanks for the replyI think we will go with a meths burner as my hubby prefer's the meths burner in his steam roller...
Hubby wants a proper coal fired steam engine but I'm afraid he will have to wait 18mths and make do with a sit n ride one rather than the real BIG thing....the question is where do we put it all??
got myself a 2nd hand Princess of wales loco and 3 carriages on Saturday "0" scale and boy does it go....wanted to play with it today but its too windy!!! it not fair!! ebay train needs a lot of work- and it leaks a lot of water...have got it to go but havent decided yet what to put as feedback for seller ???

The Ebay train probably needs the Port Faces lapped and polished, makes a world of difference.

Old Mamod trains vary a lot in quality and most require a bit of work 'out of the box' thats half the fun of them.
Have a look where the water is leaking from as the reversing block or cylinder port faces may require lapping.
I agree go with a meths burner and an uprated safety valve.
Everthing after that is optional.
