Railfest this weekend in PerthI almost forgot this weekend is Railfest at the rail museum in Perth Western Australia.
I think its the 100th anniversory of all our rail lines getting linked to perth.
They are going to fire up one of the steam locos in the museum (only with wood though not coal ) and there is to be a big model rail swapmeet there too.
Will have to get there early and see what I can find.

The UK had a railfest in 2004, as it was the 200th year of the birth of the first railborn steam engine!

Australia only had its 200th aniversary in 1988 and WA its 150th aniversary in 1979 so forgive us for being a bit late with the locos compared to the UK.
Of course there has been 50 to 60 thousand years of occupation by the Aboriginals of Australia but they didn't have steam locos either.

It's strange how most places celebrate when they have locos, as Britain built most of them

Yep,
all the early locos in our museum where built in the UK, a lot of them in Glasgow where I lived for 3 years.

hmm, Glasgow... I'm just trying to think of what loco builders were based in Glasgow... What gauge is considered standard gauge in Australia?

In the perth metro area we are narrow guage everywhere else is standard guage.
I think we have the longest stretch of dual guage track in the world in Perth.

I knew it was North something... At first I thought Andrew Barclay, but they are/were in Kilmarnock (where SM lives I think...)

Beyer Peacock built ALL the locos that run on the Isle of Man Steam Railway, except No. 15 Caledonia (Dubs built that one), the diesel and the two railbuses. It's amazing that these engines are allowed to go at 35mph despite their age! Plus the railway is still used for commuting, wonderful
